Description

The 2020 Château Pape Clément Rouge Grand Cru Classé de Graves is a benchmark Pessac-Léognan that now plays in the same qualitative league as the top First Growths—while still offering comparatively accessible pricing. This flagship red from Bernard Magrez is crafted with extraordinary precision, including meticulous hand-destemming berry by berry so that only perfectly intact grapes make it into the final blend. The result is a deeply polished, modern-classic Bordeaux that unites centuries of history with cutting-edge vineyard and cellar work.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pape Clément Rouge shows a dark, opaque garnet core with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens slowly with a bit of air, evolving from hints of smoke and warm earth into layers of crushed stone, iron filings, tobacco leaf and fine cedar. With time, richer fruit tones emerge—blackcurrant, ripe black cherry and redcurrant—woven with notes of rose petal, black tea, graphite and a subtle floral perfume. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet remarkably lively, with a sleek, dense core of black and red berries supported by firm, ultra-fine tannins. The texture is plush but never heavy, driven by a spine of fresh acidity and a pronounced mineral line that extends through the very long, layered finish. Smoky and subtly spicy, it combines concentration with precision and a characteristic Graves elegance. Still youthful and structured, it has excellent aging potential: well-stored bottles should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years, gaining further complexity in tobacco, truffle, cedar and savory spice.

Production
Château Pape Clément lies in Pessac-Léognan, in the historic Graves district just south of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils mixed with sand and clay provide ideal drainage and heat retention for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2020 rouge is a classic 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot blend, crafted from low-yielding vines that are carefully tended and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the bunches are painstakingly hand-destemmed berry by berry, with only perfectly intact grapes selected, before undergoing vinification in temperature-controlled vats to preserve fruit purity and structure. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, around 60% of which are new, with the remainder one-year barrels, adding layers of spice, structure and polish without overwhelming the character of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Graves red is a natural partner for classic French cuisine—think ribeye or côte de boeuf, roast lamb with herbs, duck breast, or game birds in rich jus. It also shines with truffled dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Ossau-Iraty or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses; decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine unfurl its smoky, mineral and floral nuances. As it matures, a shorter decant—simply to remove sediment and give it a gentle awakening—will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest documented wine estates in Bordeaux, with origins dating back to the early 14th century when it was owned by Bertrand de Got, who later became Pope Clement V—hence the estate’s name. Situated in the heart of Graves and now classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, the château has played a key role in establishing Pessac-Léognan’s reputation for world-class, age-worthy reds and whites. Under the stewardship of Bernard Magrez, Pape Clément has undergone substantial investment in both vineyard and cellar, combining meticulous handwork, strict selection and modern precision with its historic terroir. The estate is now regularly recognized by international critics with scores in the mid-to-high 90s, confirming its standing among the elite properties of Bordeaux.
