Description

2020 Château Nénin Pomerol is a poised, modern expression of one of the appellation’s most historic estates, combining the sensual richness of Pomerol with the precision of contemporary Bordeaux winemaking. Sourced from the estate’s prime clay-gravel parcels on the famed Pomerol plateau, it delivers depth, structure and purity in a classically styled yet approachable grand vin. As an en primeur release, it offers collectors the opportunity to secure a top-tier Pomerol while it is still resting in the château’s cellars, with delivery scheduled for spring 2025.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Nénin shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple color, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with a polished intensity of black cherry, plum and blackberry, layered with notes of violet, graphite and warm spice, followed by subtle hints of cocoa, cedar and a touch of espresso from fine French oak. On the palate, this Pomerol is medium to full-bodied, with a core of ripe, dark fruit wrapped in finely textured, grainy tannins. Merlot brings its signature plushness and succulence, while Cabernet Franc adds lift, freshness and a refined, gently herbal complexity. You can expect flavors of black cherries, mulberries and boysenberries interwoven with dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and a stony, mineral edge that speaks clearly of the plateau terroir. The acidity is well-judged, giving the wine tension and length, and the finish is long and layered. Built with aging in mind, 2020 Château Nénin should evolve beautifully over 10–20 years from vintage, gaining further aromatic complexity and silky harmony in bottle.

Production
Château Nénin’s vineyards lie largely in a single contiguous block on the Pomerol plateau, with the grand vin drawn from roughly 8 hectares of the estate’s very best clay and gravel soils. This mosaic of oligocene deposits, alluvial gravels from the Dordogne, siliceous clays, quartz, granite, iron-rich layers and basaltic pebbles creates a complex, well-draining terroir ideally suited to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted to ensure only the finest fruit makes it into the grand vin. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats to preserve fruit purity and finesse, followed by élevage in French oak barrels—of which a significant proportion are new—to build structure, polish the tannins and add subtle aromatic nuance, without overwhelming the character of the vineyard.

Food & Serving
This refined Pomerol is a natural partner for classic French cuisine and elegant, savory dishes. Think roast lamb with rosemary, tournedos Rossini, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffled pasta, grilled veal chops and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. When young, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to open fully; with more bottle age, a gentle decant shortly before serving will be sufficient to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Nénin is one of Pomerol’s long-established estates, with roots on the plateau dating back to the 19th century. Owned by the Despujol family from 1847, the property entered a new era in 1997 when it was acquired by Jean-Hubert Delon of the renowned Delon family, who also own Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien. Since then, Nénin has undergone a complete transformation: vineyard restructuring, drainage, replanting, updated training methods and state-of-the-art cellar modernization, including expanded, climate-controlled cellars and a new barrel room. These investments have firmly re-positioned Château Nénin among the leading estates of Pomerol, recognized for producing grand vins that combine depth, elegance and age-worthiness, while its second wine, Fugue de Nénin, showcases the estate’s broader terroir with a more accessible style.
