Description

Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2020 is the highly sought-after second wine of the legendary Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac. Blending 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, it delivers a remarkably serious, structured expression that rivals many first wines from other châteaux. Born from one of Bordeaux’s standout modern vintages, it captures the opulence, precision and polish that have made Château Mouton Rothschild a global benchmark.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Petit Mouton shows a deep garnet hue with a vibrant purple rim, signalling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is immediately seductive, opening with pure cassis and crushed blackberry, followed by juicy blueberry tones. As it unfurls, more complex layers emerge: cool menthol, freshly tanned leather, espresso roast and a hint of cedar and graphite, all wrapped in a refined oak frame. On the palate, this is anything but “petit.” The wine is full-bodied yet finely drawn, with a solid, architectural frame of grainy, precise tannins. Blackcurrant and ripe dark berries dominate, supported by notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans and subtle spice. The lively acidity keeps everything fresh and elongated, leading to a long, energetic finish that suggests excellent aging potential. While already impressive with a brief aeration, it will reward patience; expect a drinking window from around 2026–2030 and continued evolution for 15–20 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Le Petit Mouton is sourced from approximately 26% of Château Mouton Rothschild’s 74 hectares of vineyards in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, close to the border with Saint-Estèphe and neighboring the iconic Château Lafite-Rothschild. The gravelly soils over limestone and clay are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, offering excellent drainage and heat retention that promote perfect phenolic ripeness. The grapes—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc—are carefully hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity. In the cellar, the lots are vinified separately to preserve the character of each plot, before rigorous selection determines what goes into the Grand Vin and what is destined for Le Petit Mouton. Traditional Bordeaux vinification, temperature-controlled fermentation and élevage in high-quality oak barrels (a significant portion new, reflecting the château’s exacting standards) shape the wine’s structure, polish and age-worthiness.

Food & Serving
This Pauillac is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes: think grilled or roasted lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, entrecôte bordelaise, venison, game birds or braised beef short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom jus, hard aged cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar, and refined charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. For youthful vintages like 2020, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully express; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant just to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild, located in Pauillac in the heart of Bordeaux’s Médoc, is one of the most celebrated names in fine wine. Long owned by the Rothschild family, the estate was famously elevated in 1973 from Second Growth to Premier Grand Cru Classé—the only such promotion in the history of the 1855 Classification—cementing its status among Bordeaux’s elite. Under Baron Philippe and later Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, Mouton became renowned not only for the quality of its wines but also for its artist-designed labels, which change each vintage and have featured major figures of 20th- and 21st-century art. With 74 hectares planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the estate is a benchmark for powerful yet refined Pauillac. Le Petit Mouton, its second wine, offers a more approachable but still profoundly serious window into the style and terroir of this iconic château.
