Description
The 2020 Château Moulin Saint-Georges Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a polished, classically styled Right Bank Bordeaux that beautifully captures the richness and finesse of this outstanding vintage. Crafted just across the road from the famed Château Ausone and under the same ownership, it offers a true insider’s glimpse into top-tier Saint-Émilion at a more accessible level. This Grand Cru combines the plush, Merlot-driven fruit the appellation is known for with the structure and aromatic lift of Cabernet Franc, resulting in a wine that is both immediately captivating and built to evolve.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Moulin Saint-Georges shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with ripe black cherries, plum compote and blackcurrant, layered with notes of violet, graphite, baking spice, and a subtle hint of cocoa and toasted cedar. With some air, more floral tones and a touch of savory herbs emerge, adding complexity and refinement.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple, velvety texture typical of high-quality Saint-Émilion. Ripe dark fruit flavors—blackberry, black cherry, and damson—are framed by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, well-integrated acidity that keeps everything precise and balanced. Hints of licorice, espresso, and mineral notes from the limestone-rich soils linger on a long, elegant finish. The 2020 vintage has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more from release, developing greater complexity, softness, and secondary nuances of truffle, tobacco, and forest floor over time.
Production
Château Moulin Saint-Georges is situated on the limestone-clay slopes of Saint-Émilion, in close proximity to the plateau that produces some of the appellation’s most revered wines. The terroir combines limestone subsoils with clay and fine gravels, providing excellent drainage and imparting both power and minerality to the Merlot- and Cabernet Franc–dominated blend. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and strict selection of bunches. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels—often with a significant proportion of new oak—to add structure, polish, and aromatic complexity, while still allowing the character of the fruit and the vineyard to shine through.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, and veal, as well as hearty casseroles, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. It also works well alongside truffle-infused plates and dishes featuring root vegetables and rich sauces. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open, while older, more mature bottles may need a gentler, shorter decanting primarily to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Moulin Saint-Georges is owned and managed by the Vauthier family, the same family behind the legendary Château Ausone, one of Saint-Émilion’s premier estates. Located just outside the village of Saint-Émilion, Moulin Saint-Georges has long been regarded as a hidden gem, delivering a level of precision, purity, and terroir expression that far exceeds its modest profile. Under the careful stewardship of the Vauthiers, the estate has benefitted from meticulous vineyard work and modern yet sensitive winemaking, securing its reputation as a reliable source of high-quality, ageworthy Saint-Émilion. In the context of Bordeaux, Moulin Saint-Georges is often admired for bringing some of the style and discipline of Ausone to a wine that remains comparatively accessible, both in approachability and in value.
