Description

The 2020 Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé in magnum format is a compelling expression of one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates. Crafted from a stringent selection at every stage of production, it captures the power, precision, and poise that define top Saint-Estèphe. This Grand Cru Classé combines the structure and tannic backbone of the appellation with the elegance and finesse that have made Château Montrose a benchmark of the Left Bank.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2020 Montrose shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens slowly at first, then unfolds in impressive layers: black cherry compote, warm cassis, and baked plum are lifted by notes of redcurrant jelly, dark chocolate, licorice, cardamom, and a delicate touch of candied violets. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with remarkable intensity delivered in an almost understated, graceful frame. Super-ripe, ultra-fine tannins give a velvety structure, while vibrant acidity keeps the dense black fruit—cassis, blackberry, and black cherry—focused and fresh. Subtle oak spice, graphite, and a savory mineral edge complete the profile, leading to a long, poised finish. Built for longevity, this 2020 Montrose in magnum has significant aging potential; properly cellared, it will continue to evolve and gain complexity over two to three decades or more.

Production
Château Montrose sits on a prime gravel terrace overlooking the Gironde estuary in Saint-Estèphe, a terroir renowned for its deep gravel, clay, and sand soils that favor Cabernet Sauvignon and produce wines of great structure and longevity. The 2020 blend is composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 76%), complemented by Merlot (20%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and a touch of Petit Verdot (1%), all sourced from meticulously tended estate vineyards. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the finest berries are used. Vinification is traditional yet precise, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity and detail of fruit. The Grand Vin represents a rigorous selection—only a fraction of the total production—and is matured in French oak barrels, with a high proportion of new wood, for about 18 months to refine tannins, add complexity, and integrate its subtle spice into the wine’s powerful, structured frame.

Food & Serving
This structured yet refined Saint-Estèphe is superb with classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, ribeye steak, beef Wellington, or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, venison, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, especially in magnum, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to open fully; as it ages and tertiary notes develop, a shorter decant of about an hour will usually be sufficient to remove sediment and awaken its bouquet.

Producer
Château Montrose is a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and one of the most esteemed estates in Saint-Estèphe. Established in the 19th century, it quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the Médoc’s most profound, long-lived wines, often rivaling the First Growths in quality. Its gravelly, well-drained vineyards overlooking the Gironde, combined with rigorous vineyard management and exacting standards in the cellar, have cemented Montrose’s status as a reference point for powerful yet impeccably balanced Bordeaux. In recent decades, significant investments in the vineyard and winery—along with a focus on precision, sustainability, and ever-stricter selection—have propelled the estate to even greater heights, with top vintages regularly earning near-perfect scores from leading critics.
