Description
The 2020 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a polished, classically styled southern Rhône red that balances richness with remarkable freshness. Sourced from some of the appellation’s most coveted plateau vineyards, it showcases the depth and complexity that have made Châteauneuf-du-Pape a benchmark for Grenache-based blends. This cuvée reflects centuries of Rhône winemaking tradition at a historic estate that has helped shape the reputation of the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet highlights toward the rim. The nose opens with ripe red and black fruits—think Morello cherry, wild raspberry and blackcurrant—layered with garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender), licorice, cracked pepper, and a hint of warm stones and subtle spice from the élevage.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely structured, with juicy, concentrated fruit wrapped around silky but firm tannins. Flavors of dark cherry, plum and red berries are interwoven with notes of dried herbs, cocoa, tobacco leaf, and a touch of savory game. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, keeping the wine lively despite its power. The finish is long, persistent and nicely stony, speaking clearly of its terroir. While already approachable in youth with some aeration, this vintage has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining more truffle, leather and dried fruit complexity over time.
Production
Château Mont-Redon’s vineyards lie on the famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape plateau, where old-vine Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties are rooted in a tapestry of galets roulés (large rounded stones), red clay and sandy soils that store heat by day and release it at night. The fruit is harvested parcel by parcel, often by hand, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and vinified variety and plot by plot, with temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. The final blend is aged—primarily in large neutral oak foudres and vats, with a judicious use of barrels—to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression while adding subtle texture and complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef daube or short ribs, duck breast, game birds, and hearty stews. It also pairs beautifully with grilled meats, mushroom dishes, truffle-infused cuisine and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; in its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open up its aromatic layers and soften the tannins, while older bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Mont-Redon is one of the historic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with vineyard origins tracing back to the 14th century and a modern legacy shaped by the Abeille and Fabre families. Over generations, the domaine has assembled one of the largest contiguous holdings in the appellation, including prime parcels on the iconic stone-strewn plateau, giving it a significant voice in the style and quality of the region. Renowned for its meticulous vineyard work and its focus on elegance and balance over sheer power, Mont-Redon has been a reference point for classic, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape and has contributed greatly to the global reputation of Rhône wines.
