Description
Bottled in the generous magnum format, the 2020 Château Margaux is a benchmark Left Bank wine from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates. This vintage is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, crafted to embody the château’s hallmark of power wrapped in silken elegance. Already hailed by top critics with scores between 99 and 100 points, it is a modern classic that belongs in any serious Bordeaux collection. What sets the 2020 Château Margaux apart is its combination of intensity, aromatic finesse and almost weightless structure, all elevated by the slow-aging advantages of the magnum bottle. With its complex bouquet of dark fruit, floral notes and graphite, it captures everything that has made Château Margaux one of the most celebrated names in wine since the 18th century. This is a wine built for decades, yet already irresistible in its youthful, polished form.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Margaux Magnum shows a deep, limpid ruby-purple hue with a vibrant rim, testifying to both concentration and freshness. The nose is captivating and layered: ripe blackberries and wild raspberries are intertwined with rose petals, violets, cedar shavings and pencil lead, supported by subtle notes of fine cigar box and a delicate mineral edge. With time in the glass, more nuance emerges—hints of crushed redcurrant, spice and a faint, saline lift.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a core of vivid, pure fruit that feels both dense and luminous. The texture is velvety, with ultra-fine, powdery tannins that frame the wine rather than dominate it. Black and red berries unfold alongside notes of graphite, cedar and a faint floral perfume that carries through to a long, mouthwatering, almost salty finish of impressive persistence. The bright, well-integrated acidity keeps everything fresh and precise. In magnum, this 2020 has outstanding aging potential: it will begin to show its best from around 2030 and can easily evolve gracefully for 30–40 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Château Margaux sits at the heart of the Margaux appellation on deep, well-drained gravel soils over limestone and clay—an iconic terroir that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon and yields wines of finesse rather than sheer weight. The 2020 fruit was meticulously hand-harvested in small batches, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes made it into the Grand Vin. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, to respect the nuances of each plot, followed by blending of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to achieve the signature balance of structure and fragrance. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it develops additional complexity, polish and integration before bottling, with magnums chosen specifically for their superior aging performance.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Château Margaux Magnum is an exquisite partner for refined, savoury dishes that echo its depth and elegance. Think roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison or other game, pigeon, or dishes featuring truffle, morels or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with classic French cuisine—duck breast, beef Wellington, or a rich jus—and with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Ossau-Iraty or mature cheddar. Serve at 17–18°C (around 62–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is recommended: 2–3 hours before serving for a more open, expressive profile, or longer if you prefer the tannins to soften further, especially when enjoying it in its first 10–15 years.
