Description
Château Margaux 2020 is a spellbinding expression of one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates, uniting power, purity and finesse in a single glass. Crafted from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, it is a grand vin that captures the essence of the legendary Margaux terroir in a remarkably precise, modern style. Widely hailed by critics with near-perfect scores (99–100 points from leading voices such as Vinous, Robert Parker and James Suckling), this is a collector’s wine destined to become a benchmark of the vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Margaux shows a luminous, deep ruby hue with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is exquisitely perfumed and layered, unfolding with blackberries, ripe raspberries and wild berries, entwined with rose petals, violets, cedar, pencil shavings and a delicate graphite minerality. Subtle notes of spice, fine tobacco and warm earth emerge with air, adding further complexity.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, yet effortlessly graceful, with a strikingly vivid core of dark, pure fruit. The texture is silky and layered, the tannins ultra-fine and powdery, supporting the fruit rather than dominating it. Bright, well-integrated acidity brings lift and tension, leading into a penetrating, saline and almost endlessly persistent finish. Already seductive in its youth, the 2020 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for decades, rewarding careful cellaring over 20–40 years or more.
Production
Château Margaux sits on some of the finest gravelly soils in the Médoc, where deep beds of gravel over limestone and clay provide exceptional drainage and help produce Cabernet Sauvignon of remarkable elegance and aromatic intensity. The estate’s old vines are meticulously tended, with stringent selection in the vineyard and at harvest to ensure only the finest fruit makes it into the grand vin. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation in a combination of traditional wooden and modern temperature-controlled vats. Following fermentation and maceration tailored to each plot, the wine is aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and rests on fine lees. This careful élevage polishes the tannins, enhances the wine’s signature perfume and frames its pure fruit with subtle, integrated oak.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Château Margaux is a natural partner for refined, flavourful dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffled poultry, duck breast, and mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 2–3 hours in its youth will help the wine open and soften, while mature bottles may need only a gentle decant to remove sediment just before serving.
Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s five original First Growths, enshrined in the 1855 Classification and revered for producing some of the most elegant and perfumed wines of the Médoc. Wine has been made on the estate since at least the 16th century, but it was in the 18th and 19th centuries that Margaux’s reputation for finesse and longevity was firmly established. Today, under the stewardship of the Mentzelopoulos family, the château continues to set the standard for the Margaux appellation, combining rigorous vineyard management, state-of-the-art winemaking and an unwavering commitment to quality. Consistently among the highest-rated wines in Bordeaux, Château Margaux remains a touchstone for collectors and enthusiasts seeking the pinnacle of Cabernet-based grand vin.
