In the glass, the 2020 Lynch Bages is an almost opaque, deep purple-black, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose opens slowly but confidently, especially after a short decant, with layers of pure blackcurrant, black cherry and preserved plum. As it unfolds, more complex nuances emerge: rose petals, cedar cigar box, incense, cardamom, graphite, smoky bacon and a savoury touch of black olive. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, firmly structured Pauillac, with a core of ripe black fruit supported by very fine, dense, grainy tannins. There is a striking freshness that lifts the richness, keeping everything precise and energetic rather than heavy. The mid-palate is generous and layered, moving from cassis and dark cherry to hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf, spice and smoked meat. The finish is long, clean and authoritative, suggesting decades of evolution ahead. While already impressive with air, this 2020 is built for the cellar and will reward patient aging over 15–30 years or more, developing additional complexity and tertiary notes with time.

Production
Château Lynch Bages is located on the gravelly plateau of Bages in Pauillac, an enviable terroir of deep Günzian gravel over limestone and clay that naturally favours Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, a composition that reflects both the strength of Cabernet in the vintage and the finesse of the Merlot parcels. Grapes are meticulously sorted and harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, a practice rooted in the estate’s historic reputation for often being among the last to pick in Pauillac. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for a precise, gentle extraction of colour, tannin and aromatics. The wine then matures for around 18 months in French oak barrels, about 75% of which are new, lending subtle spice, structure and texture without overwhelming the purity of the fruit, all at a relatively modest alcohol level of around 13.4%.

Food & Serving
This is a quintessential food wine for rich, flavourful dishes. Classic pairings include roast rib of beef, lamb carré with rosemary, venison, duck breast and slow-braised short ribs; it also shines alongside game birds, truffle dishes and hard, aged cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Decanting is strongly recommended in its youth—give it 2–3 hours for the aromatics and structure to fully open. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Bordeaux stems. As it evolves in bottle, it will gain even more nuance and can then complement more complex, slow-cooked and autumnal cuisine beautifully.
