Description
The 2020 Château L’Evangile Pomerol in magnum format is a benchmark Right Bank Bordeaux, uniting opulence, precision, and remarkable depth. Sourced from one of Pomerol’s most coveted terroirs, this wine showcases the richness of Merlot and the lift of Cabernet Franc in a superb vintage. The magnum bottling not only elevates its presence at the table, but also promises a slower, more graceful evolution in the cellar. Renowned for its sensual texture and refined power, Château L’Evangile has long been considered one of Pomerol’s elite estates, alongside its famous neighbors. The 2020 vintage continues this legacy, reflecting both the estate’s meticulous vineyard work and a modern, fine-tuned approach in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château L’Evangile Pomerol shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, almost opaque at the core, with a vibrant rim hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose is complex and layered: ripe black plum, blackberry, and black cherry are intertwined with notes of violet, graphite, cocoa, and subtle truffle, framed by fine-grained cedar and a touch of sweet spice from quality oak.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a silken, enveloping texture that is quintessentially Pomerol. Ripe dark fruits, damson plum, and cassis unfold slowly, supported by polished tannins and a precise, fresh acidity that keeps everything in balance. Nuances of mocha, licorice, tobacco leaf, and wet earth appear on the long, resonant finish. In magnum, its aging potential is significantly extended; while already impressive with proper aeration, this 2020 will reward patience over 15–30 years, gaining complexity, suppleness, and even greater aromatic nuance.
Production
Château L’Evangile is situated on the famed Pomerol plateau, on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, where clay and gravel soils sit over iron-rich subsoils that are particularly well-suited to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This combination of deep clay, which retains water and promotes concentration, and surface gravels, which offer drainage and finesse, is at the heart of the estate’s plush yet structured style. The grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection of only the healthiest fruit. In the cellar, traditional Bordelais methods are combined with modern precision: fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new) for well over a year, allowing it to integrate its structure and oak influence while retaining the energy and aromatic clarity characteristic of the 2020 vintage.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Château L’Evangile Pomerol Magnum is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes that can match its depth and texture. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or game birds with mushroom jus, and richly sauced dishes like beef short rib or braised veal. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused preparations, wild mushroom risotto, and hard or semi-firm cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or a well-aged Tomme. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Given its youth and concentration, especially in magnum, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended if opened in the near term; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant (around 1 hour) will suffice to let the wine fully express its nuanced bouquet.
