Description

Bottled in magnum for long, graceful aging, the 2020 Château Léoville Las Cases is a powerful, deeply structured Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855 yet often rivaling the Firsts in quality and longevity, Léoville Las Cases is a benchmark for classic, Cabernet-driven Médoc. This 2020 release draws on the historic heart of the original Léoville vineyard, delivering a wine of precision, depth and remarkable finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Léoville Las Cases Magnum shows an intense, youthful, almost opaque ruby-purple color, hinting at its concentration and long life ahead. The nose is refined yet powerful, with layered aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and black cherry, supported by notes of cedar, graphite, violets and subtle tobacco. With air, more complexity emerges: hints of dark chocolate, pencil shavings, crushed stones and a touch of truffle and spice from quality oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied, focused and tightly woven, with a core of pure dark fruit framed by firm, ultra-fine tannins and vibrant, fresh acidity. The structure is classic Léoville Las Cases: serious, linear and built for the long term, yet with a sense of elegance and precision that makes it already compelling in youth. The oak is polished and integrated, adding subtle toast and sweet spice without overshadowing the fruit or terroir expression. In magnum, the 2020 vintage has excellent aging potential; properly stored, it should evolve beautifully over two to three decades or more, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and a velvety texture with time.

Production
The vineyards of Château Léoville Las Cases lie in the northern part of Saint-Julien, immediately adjacent to the Pauillac border and neighboring the famed Château Latour. Here, deep, well-drained gravel soils over clay and sand, combined with the moderating influence of the nearby Gironde estuary, create an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon and its classic Bordeaux companions. The estate is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc playing supporting roles, and the vines are carefully tended with rigorous vineyard management and low yields to maximize concentration. Grapes are picked by hand and meticulously sorted before fermentation, ensuring only the healthiest, ripest berries make it into the Grand Vin. Vinification follows traditional Bordeaux methods designed to express the character of the terroir: controlled fermentations in temperature-regulated vats, followed by élevage in French oak barriques, a high proportion of which are new, to add structure, polish and aging capacity without masking the wine’s inherent finesse.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Château Léoville Las Cases Magnum is an exceptional partner for refined, savory dishes, particularly red meats and game. Think roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison or slow-braised beef cheeks, as well as classic French cuisine such as entrecôte bordelaise, duck breast or truffled poultry. Mature hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or well-aged cheddar also pair beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to best showcase its aromatics and structure. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a slightly shorter decant of 1–2 hours will generally suffice, with magnum format extending both its cellaring horizon and its evolution in the glass.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the oldest and most storied estates in the Médoc, originating from the vast Domaine de Léoville, which once belonged to some of France’s wealthiest and most influential noble families. Following the French Revolution, the grand estate was divided between 1826 and 1840, and from this partition emerged Château Léoville Las Cases, formed from three-fifths of the original property and retaining the historic core of the vineyard. The Las Cases family—Pierre Jean, Adolphe and Gabriel—were stewards of the domaine until the early 20th century, when Théophile Skawinski acquired a share and became its administrator. Since the late 19th century, the property has remained under the guidance of the same family line and is today represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, also owner of Château Potensac in the Médoc and Château Nénin in Pomerol. Renowned for producing some of the most powerful, long-lived and terroir-expressive wines in Saint-Julien, Léoville Las Cases consistently ranks among Bordeaux’s elite, with a reputation for wines that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the region’s First Growths.
