Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cuvée Barthélemy shows a deep, luminous ruby-red with garnet reflections, hinting at both concentration and elegance. The nose is complex and expressive, unfolding with ripe plum and blackcurrant (cassis), followed by cedarwood, dried herbs, cracked black pepper, roasted almonds and a subtle dark chocolate note. The aromas feel detailed and layered rather than heavy, with a refined, almost perfumed lift. On the palate, the wine is silky yet firmly structured, with a beautiful interplay between ripe, dark fruit, savoury spice and mineral freshness. Juicy plum and cassis are wrapped in fine-grained tannins, supported by notes of cedar, graphite, gentle pepper, roasted nuts and cocoa. The texture is notably complex and harmonious, reflecting the co-fermentation of different grape varieties and parcels: it feels both deep and energetic, with impressive balance and a very long, persistent finish. Made without added sulphur and aged for an extended period in used oak, the 2020 Barthélemy has the concentration, acidity and structure to age gracefully for 10–20 years in a good cellar, gaining further nuance and tertiary notes of tobacco, leather and truffle over time.

Production
Château Le Puy lies on a limestone and rocky plateau in Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, a terroir that naturally limits yields and lends a distinctive mineral backbone and freshness to the wines. The estate is farmed biodynamically, with no chemical fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides, and the grapes for Barthélemy are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. Unlike most Bordeaux châteaux, Le Puy does not vinify each plot separately to blend later; instead, the grapes are picked together and co-fermented, allowing the native yeasts, grape varieties and different parcels to interact from the very beginning. Fermentation is long and patient, carried out with indigenous yeasts and without the addition of sulphur, sugar or other enological additives. The wine then undergoes an extended ageing—around two years—in old foudres and seasoned barriques (deliberately avoiding new oak, so the fruit and terroir stay front and centre), and is bottled without filtration, preserving maximum texture and aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a refined yet characterful Bordeaux that pairs beautifully with dishes that echo its depth and savoury complexity. Think dry-aged ribeye with rosemary and sea salt, slow-braised lamb shoulder, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or hearty dishes like mushroom risotto, lentil cassoulet and roasted root vegetables with herbs. It also works very well with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Pecorino or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if the wine is too warm, briefly chill the bottle to bring back its freshness. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to let the aromatics blossom and to soften the structure; with more bottle age, a gentle decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.
