Description

2020 Château Lascombes Margaux Grand Cru Classé is a powerful, classically styled red from one of Margaux’s most respected Second Growth estates. Combining depth, elegance, and aging potential, it captures the ripe, concentrated character of the 2020 vintage while remaining unmistakably Médoc in its structure. This is a wine for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate a more ‘masculine’ expression of Margaux, with firm tannins wrapped around opulent dark fruit.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Lascombes shows a deep garnet-purple colour, almost opaque at the core, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with intense aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry, followed by layers of sweet spices, subtle laurel leaf, and a touch of forest floor and undergrowth that adds complexity. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly fruited, with a core of ripe black fruits—cassis, black plum, and blackberry compote—supported by earthy undertones and a refined, spicy edge. The tannins are firm and grainy yet well-integrated, giving the wine a solid backbone and a decidedly structured, ‘masculine’ feel for Margaux. The finish is long, savoury, and flavourful, with persistent dark fruit and a delicate touch of dried herbs. While already impressive, this 2020 will greatly benefit from further cellaring, with an ideal drinking window starting around 2026 and extending well into the next decade as the tannins soften and the bouquet becomes more nuanced.

Production
Château Lascombes is located in the heart of Margaux, on a patchwork of gravel, clay, and limestone soils that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2020 is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, reflecting both the estate’s gravelly Cabernet parcels and its richer clay plots that favour Merlot. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to ensure only the finest berries make it into the Grand Vin. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatics and fruit purity, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine gains structure, spice complexity, and the ability to age gracefully.

Food & Serving
This robust, structured Margaux pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye steak, beef Wellington, or slow-braised short ribs. It also works well with game birds, truffled dishes, and mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and refined tannins. For young bottles, especially before 2028, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to help the wine open up, soften the tannins, and reveal more of its Margaux elegance beneath the power.

Producer
Château Lascombes is a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé estate from the 1855 Classification, and one of the key historical properties of Margaux. Named after Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes, its roots go back to the 17th century, with a long tradition of crafting structured, ageworthy wines. After a period under Colony Capital, the estate was acquired in 2011 by MACSF (Mutuelle d’Assurances du Corps de Santé Français), who have continued to invest in quality, vineyard management, and cellar precision while preserving the house style. Today, Château Lascombes is known for producing one of the more powerful and “masculine” Margaux wines, combining the appellation’s hallmark finesse with impressive concentration and longevity, making it a reference point for collectors of Left Bank Bordeaux.
