Description
The 2020 Château Lafite Rothschild Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux that captures all the elegance, power and finesse for which Lafite is renowned. Crafted from a classic Médoc blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it marries incredible concentration with a remarkably graceful, almost weightless texture. With near-perfect critical acclaim (98–100 points across leading critics), this is a collector’s vintage with the pedigree to grace top cellars for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Lafite Rothschild is a deep garnet-purple, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its youth and intensity. The nose is wonderfully expressive and layered: baked black cherries, ripe blackberries and crème de cassis unfold first, followed by notes of mocha, licorice, smoked meat and a dusting of Sichuan pepper, with a subtle lift of eucalyptus and graphite in the background.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet extraordinarily intense, a study in restraint and precision. Layers of dark, ripe black fruit are interwoven with smoky, spicy nuances and a fine mineral core. The tannins are exquisitely polished and silty, providing structure without any harshness, while a perfectly judged freshness keeps everything in balance. The finish is very long, lingering for minutes with echoes of spice, tobacco and dark fruit. Built for the long haul, this Lafite has superb aging potential and will evolve beautifully for 30–50 years or more in a proper cellar.
Production
The 2020 Lafite Rothschild is a classic Pauillac blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, sourced from the château’s exceptional gravelly hilltops that overlook the Gironde estuary. These deep gravel soils over limestone are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, giving wines of great finesse, structure and aromatic complexity. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, allowing for meticulous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification is traditionally Bordelais yet highly precise, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats and a long, gentle maceration to extract fine tannins and pure fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a high proportion new), where it slowly integrates its oak, develops complexity and refines its signature Lafite texture.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Lafite Rothschild is a natural partner for classic haute cuisine and refined dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary, prime rib of beef, venison or other game, and dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms or rich jus. It also shines alongside mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its aromatic complexity and soften the structure; with maturity, a gentle 1-hour decant to remove sediment will suffice.
