Description

The 2020 Château Lafite Rothschild Carruades de Lafite Magnum offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Bordeaux’s most coveted second wines in a grand, cellar‑worthy format. Sourced from the iconic Lafite estate in Pauillac, this cuvée captures the elegance, finesse and precision that have made Château Lafite Rothschild a global benchmark. Presented in magnum, it is ideal for collectors, long-term aging and special occasions where you want both pedigree and presence on the table. As the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite is crafted with the same care and philosophy as the grand vin, but with a slightly higher proportion of Merlot for added suppleness and early approachability. The 2020 vintage, a highly acclaimed year in Bordeaux, delivers exceptional concentration, purity of fruit and classic Pauillac structure. Rooted in the legendary gravel soils of the Lafite plateau, Carruades has a history of showcasing the estate’s more accessible yet distinctly Lafite expression since the late 19th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Carruades de Lafite in magnum shows a deep garnet-purple color with a vibrant rim, hinting at both its youth and its considerable potential. The nose is refined and layered rather than showy, opening with blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and cassis, followed by notes of graphite, cedar shavings, tobacco leaf and a touch of violet and crushed stones. With air, subtler nuances of cigar box, dark chocolate and a gentle spice from carefully integrated oak emerge. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with the serene, effortless texture that is a hallmark of Lafite. Fine, silky yet persistent tannins frame a core of blackcurrant, plum and black cherry, accented by pencil lead, fresh tobacco, licorice and a saline, mineral edge. The acidity is fresh and precise, lending lift and definition to the long, elegant finish. In magnum, the 2020 Carruades de Lafite has excellent aging potential—expect it to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and even greater harmony with time, while still offering pleasure in its first decade if properly aerated.

Production
The grapes for Carruades de Lafite come primarily from parcels on the Carruades plateau adjoining the great Lafite vineyard in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Here, deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide outstanding drainage and heat retention, ideal for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon while preserving freshness and aromatic complexity. The 2020 blend typically leans on Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Merlot, with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, reflecting the classic structure of Pauillac. Harvesting at Château Lafite Rothschild is carried out parcel by parcel, entirely by hand, allowing careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, each lot is vinified separately in temperature-controlled vats to respect the character of each parcel and grape variety. The wine then undergoes élevage in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, for around 16–18 months. The use of fine-grained oak is deliberately measured to enhance structure and complexity without overshadowing the purity of fruit or the signature Lafite finesse.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Carruades de Lafite Magnum is a versatile yet classically styled Pauillac that shines alongside refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb (especially with rosemary and garlic), dry-aged entrecôte or ribeye, beef Wellington, and slow-braised beef or veal. Game birds such as roast duck or pigeon, as well as dishes with truffle, wild mushrooms or a red wine reduction, will also complement its complexity. For cheese, opt for aged Comté, Ossau-Iraty, or well-matured hard cheeses rather than intensely blue varieties. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression of aroma and structure. Given its youth and magnum format, decanting is recommended: 1–2 hours before serving will help the wine open up, soften the tannins and reveal its full aromatic range. For longer-term cellared bottles approaching maturity, a shorter, gentle decant to remove any sediment will suffice.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild stands among the most revered names in the world of fine wine, with a documented history dating back to at least the 13th century and a reputation cemented in the 18th century as a favorite at the court of Versailles. Classified as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Lafite has long been recognized as one of the pinnacle estates of Pauillac and the entire Médoc. Today, under the stewardship of the Rothschild family, the château continues to set the standard for elegance, longevity and terroir expression in Bordeaux. Carruades de Lafite is the estate’s second wine, crafted from selected parcels and younger vines, and first appeared under this name in the late 19th century. It has since become a sought-after label in its own right, offering enthusiasts a more approachable, earlier-drinking interpretation of the Lafite style, while still rooted firmly in the same legendary terroir. The consistent acclaim for both Lafite and Carruades underscores the estate’s meticulous viticulture, restrained winemaking and enduring significance at the very top of the Bordeaux hierarchy.
