Description
La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion 2020 is the sophisticated second wine of the famed Château La Mission Haut-Brion, offering a more approachable expression of this legendary estate without sacrificing depth or pedigree. Sourced from the same prized vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, it captures the character of the grand vin in a supple, earlier-drinking style. The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded as outstanding, and this wine is a particularly successful example: refined, dark-fruited and beautifully polished.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, youthful and vivid at the rim. The nose opens confidently with ripe blackcurrants, stewed black plum and blackberry compote, layered with notes of chocolate mint, pencil shavings, clove and a touch of warm, earthy soil.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a core of juicy, concentrated black fruits wrapped in fresh acidity and fine-grained, rounded tannins. Hints of baking spice, graphite, cocoa and subtle oak underpin the fruit, leading into a long, gently spicy finish. While already harmonious and pleasurable in its youth, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness with bottle age.
Production
La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is crafted from vineyards in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, just south of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils mixed with clay and sand provide excellent drainage and promote slow, even ripening of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The estate benefits from a mild microclimate that helps achieve both concentration and aromatic finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted to ensure only the best berries make it into the final blend. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats to preserve purity and precision, followed by maturation in French oak barrels—some new—for around 18 months. This élevage adds structure, spice and textural polish without overwhelming the character of the fruit or terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2020 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is a versatile partner for refined, flavor-packed dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, braised short ribs, or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine open up its aromatics and soften the tannins, while older bottles may need a more gentle, shorter decant just to separate the wine from any sediment.
Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates, with a history dating back to the 16th century and a long-standing reputation as a benchmark of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Neighboring the illustrious Château Haut-Brion, it shares a similar gravelly terroir that has proven exceptional for producing structured, ageworthy reds of great complexity. Today, under the ownership of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the château is renowned for meticulous vineyard management and exacting cellar work, consistently earning critical acclaim for both its grand vin and its second wine, La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion. The estate stands as a reference point for Graves and for Bordeaux lovers worldwide seeking wines that combine power, elegance and a distinctive smoky, mineral character.
