Description

The 2020 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is a benchmark Pessac-Léognan, crafted from 48.6% Merlot, 43.2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8.2% Cabernet Franc. Hailed as one of the château’s finest modern vintages, it follows in the footsteps of the legendary 2016 and 2019 and has been awarded a perfect 100/100 points by both James Suckling and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. La Mission Haut-Brion has long stood shoulder to shoulder with the very greatest wines of Bordeaux, and 2020 is a vintage that encapsulates its power, precision and refinement.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion shows a deep garnet-purple color, dense and vibrant at the rim, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is intensely perfumed yet composed, opening with blackcurrants and black cherries layered with aromas of dark chocolate, violets and cigar tobacco, followed by subtler notes of forest floor, graphite, and a lifted touch of bergamot. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with remarkable precision and focus. The tannins are exceptionally fine, silky and seamless, giving a supple texture that supports rather than dominates the fruit. Ripe cassis, black cherry and plum are interwoven with cocoa, espresso, cedar and a mineral graphite edge, carried by a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, poised and savoury, suggesting enormous aging potential. While already stunning in its youth, this wine will reward patience over the next 20–30 years and likely beyond, as its components knit further into a deeply complex, harmonious whole.

Production
Château La Mission Haut-Brion lies in Pessac-Léognan, on deep gravel soils with clay and sand subsoils that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, giving both power and elegance. The vineyard benefits from a temperate climate moderated by nearby urban heat and the influence of the Garonne, helping grapes reach perfect ripeness while retaining freshness. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, typically by hand, with meticulous selection in the vineyard and again on sorting tables at the winery. The grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with fermentation and maceration tailored to each parcel’s character to extract fine tannins, pure fruit and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion new, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and long élevage, building structure, polish and the distinctive smoky, earthy nuance that has made La Mission Haut-Brion iconic.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is an ideal partner to refined, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or pigeon with truffle jus. It also shines alongside dishes featuring mushrooms, game birds, or earthy, slow-braised meats, and pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmesan. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses. In its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to let the fruit and floral notes fully unfurl; as it matures, a gentle 1-hour decant will be enough to remove sediment and open up the bouquet.

Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion, located in Pessac-Léognan just south of Bordeaux, is one of the region’s most storied estates and a historic rival and sibling to the neighboring Château Haut-Brion. Its origins date back to the 16th–17th centuries, and the estate has long been admired for producing wines of remarkable depth, structure and longevity. Today, under the stewardship of Domaine Clarence Dillon (the owners of Haut-Brion), La Mission Haut-Brion is regarded as one of the absolute reference points of Graves, consistently achieving critics’ highest scores and standing in quality alongside the First Growths. Its combination of gravelly terroir, meticulous vineyard management and precision winemaking has cemented its reputation as one of the world’s great red wines, with 2020 widely recognized as a brilliant, benchmark vintage.
