In the glass, the 2020 La Fleur-Pétrus is deep, saturated garnet with a youthful purple rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose opens gradually with layers of black cherry, ripe plum and wild blackberry, followed by violets, cocoa, pencil shavings and a subtle hint of truffle and graphite—classic Pomerol aromatics that grow more complex with aeration. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet impeccably poised, with a velvety, fine-grained tannic structure framing a core of dark berry fruit. Notes of black cherries, mulberries and damson unfold into nuances of mocha, cedar, licorice and a touch of savory, earthy spice. Production
Château La Fleur-Pétrus lies on Pomerol’s prized plateau, between Château Pétrus and Château La Conseillante, where deep clay and gravel soils over an iron-rich subsoil give Merlot its characteristic depth, perfume and silky power. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot, complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, all tended with meticulous plot-by-plot care and hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted carefully before undergoing fermentation in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, for around 16–18 months. This élevage lends polish, structure and complexity without overwhelming the natural elegance of the fruit.

Think roast lamb with rosemary, duck breast, veal chops, beef tenderloin, or game birds, as well as earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, lentils or black truffle. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfurl; as it matures over time, a shorter decant or careful service from bottle will be sufficient to showcase its complexity.
