Description
The 2020 Château Haut-Brion in magnum format is a regal expression of one of Bordeaux’s most enchanting First Growths. Always the charmer among the premiers crus, Haut-Brion combines effortless elegance with depth, power, and an ability to shine both in youth and with age. This 2020 release is already hailed by top critics as one of the wines of the vintage, marrying sensual texture with extraordinary complexity and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Haut-Brion shows a deep, opaque purple-black hue that clings to the bowl, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose unfurls slowly and dramatically: at first, restrained dark fruits, then wave after wave of exotic spice—cardamom, star anise, cassis liqueur—followed by rose petals, warm chocolate cake, ripe blackcurrant, raspberry coulis, and layers of cedar, crushed stones, truffle and damp, dark forest floor.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and profoundly layered, with an almost creamy density that never feels heavy. Underspoken black fruits—cassis, blackberry and black plum—interlace with spice, tobacco, smoldering oak and subtle mineral notes. The tannins are firm yet superfine and velvety, building structure without harshness, while a vivid line of freshness keeps the wine lifted and precise. The finish is very long, complex and harmonious, echoing graphite, spice and dark fruit. In magnum, the 2020 Haut-Brion has outstanding aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully for 30–50 years, gaining even more nuance and tertiary complexity.
Production
Château Haut-Brion’s vineyards lie on the privileged gravelly hillocks of Pessac-Léognan, south of the city of Bordeaux, where deep layers of gravel mixed with sand and clay provide exceptional drainage and force the vines to root deeply. This terroir, warmed by the stones and moderated by the Atlantic influence, is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which in 2020 are blended as 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17.5% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel and traditional vats—a pioneering choice for Haut-Brion as the first First Growth to adopt stainless steel tanks in 1960—followed by élevage in French oak barriques, a high proportion of which are new. This combination of meticulous selection, modern precision and classical barrel aging yields a wine of remarkable purity, depth and longevity.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Château Haut-Brion is a superb partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Think roast lamb with herbs, beef Wellington, dry-aged ribeye, venison or pigeon, as well as truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragouts, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. In its youth, especially in magnum, decanting for 2–4 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open and reveal its full aromatic range; older bottles will need more delicate handling and a shorter decant, primarily to separate the wine from any sediment.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of the most storied names in Bordeaux, and the only red wine estate outside the Médoc to be classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification. Situated in Pessac-Léognan, the estate’s history reaches back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when Haut-Brion was one of the first Bordeaux wines to be bottled and shipped under its château name, famously praised in London coffee houses by writers and statesmen of the era. In 1935, American financier Clarence Dillon acquired the property and invested heavily in restoring both vineyard and cellar, while the Dillon family later expanded their holdings with the purchase of neighboring Château La Mission Haut-Brion in 1983. Renowned for its consistently high quality, pioneering spirit (including early adoption of stainless steel fermenters) and distinctive, seductive style, Château Haut-Brion holds a singular place in Bordeaux as both a benchmark First Growth and a cornerstone of the Graves/Pessac-Léognan region.
