Description

The 2020 Château Haut-Brion Le Clarence de Haut-Brion in magnum format is a luxurious second wine from one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates. Sourced from the same legendary vineyards as the grand vin, this Pessac-Léognan red offers a refined, approachable expression of Haut-Brion’s unmistakable style. The magnum bottle further enhances its aging potential, making it ideal for collectors and for sharing on special occasions. As the second wine of Château Haut-Brion, Le Clarence delivers a remarkable balance of pedigree and relative accessibility. It typically blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot, showcasing supple fruit, polished tannins and signature smoky-mineral complexity. Named in honor of Clarence Dillon, who acquired the estate in 1935, this cuvée reflects both the historic gravitas of Haut-Brion and the finesse of modern Bordeaux craftsmanship.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion presents a deep, garnet-ruby core with violet highlights, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, interwoven with graphite, cigar box, cedar, and the subtle smoky notes so characteristic of Haut-Brion. Hints of violets, crushed stones, cocoa and a touch of warm spice add further complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied, combining plush, ripe fruit with a precise, linear structure. Silky tannins frame flavors of blackberries, cassis, redcurrant and dark cherries, backed by notes of tobacco leaf, baking spice, savory herbs and a gentle earthiness. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, giving the wine lift and energy, while the finish is long, refined and slightly saline, echoing graphite and dark fruit. In magnum, the 2020 vintage has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed from around 2026 onward, but will evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more under proper cellaring.

Production
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Pessac-Léognan, in the Graves area just south of the city of Bordeaux. These deep gravel beds, laced with sand and clay, are renowned for producing wines of aromatic complexity, finesse and a trademark smoky-mineral character. The grapes—primarily Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—are harvested parcel by parcel, typically by hand, with strict selection in both vineyard and cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing precise extraction of color, aroma and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add structure and subtle spice without overpowering the fruit. As the second wine, Le Clarence is blended from lots that express elegance and approachability while remaining faithful to the estate’s signature style.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion magnum is a versatile partner for refined, flavor-rich dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, grilled ribeye, duck breast, and game birds such as pigeon or guinea fowl. It also complements dishes with earthy elements—such as mushroom risotto, truffle-infused preparations, or roasted root vegetables—and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to unfold fully; as it matures, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes will generally suffice, mainly to remove any sediment and gently awaken the bouquet.

Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious and historic estates, located in Pessac-Léognan in the Graves region of France. Officially recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves, it is the only estate from outside the Médoc to hold this distinction. Wine has been produced at Haut-Brion since at least the 16th century, and it has long been admired for its distinctive, smoky, mineral-tinged reds that are both powerful and supremely elegant. Since the purchase by American financier Clarence Dillon in 1935, the estate has undergone continual investment and modernization, achieving a reputation at the very top of Bordeaux. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, introduced as the modern successor to the estate’s historical second wine, offers enthusiasts a more accessible yet still profoundly terroir-driven glimpse into the world of this legendary château.
