Description

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2020 is the distinguished second wine of the legendary Château Haut-Brion, offering a finely tuned expression of this First Growth estate at a more accessible level. Crafted from the same historic vineyards and with the same meticulous care as the grand vin, it captures the signature depth, elegance and smoky complexity that have made Haut-Brion a benchmark in Bordeaux. The 2020 vintage, marked by concentration and freshness, delivers a wine of impressive precision and ageworthy structure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both intensity and youth. The nose is immediately seductive, with dark cherries, blackcurrant and ripe plum layered over subtle graphite, cigar box, and the estate’s hallmark notes of warm earth, smoke and fine spice. Hints of violets, crushed stones and cocoa powder add further complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this is polished and finely textured, with supple tannins wrapped around a core of dark berry fruit, cassis and black cherry. There is a beautiful interplay between richness and lift: concentrated fruit supported by a fresh, mineral backbone and well-integrated oak. Notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, baking spice and a touch of savory truffle carry through to a long, persistent finish. While approachable in its youth with some air, the structure and balance suggest a strong aging potential of 10–20 years, during which it will gain even more nuance and tertiary complexity.

Production
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2020 is sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Pessac-Léognan in the Graves, where deep layers of gravel mixed with sand and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The terroir’s warmth and excellent drainage encourage optimal ripening while preserving freshness and finesse. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested in small parcels at peak maturity, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar door. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, where each parcel is fermented separately to preserve its character before blending. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), following the same exacting standards applied to the grand vin, to refine tannins, build texture and integrate the oak seamlessly with the fruit.

Food & Serving
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2020 pairs beautifully with refined meat dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with wild mushrooms. It also shines alongside game birds, truffle-inflected dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky structure. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open; as it matures, a shorter decant of around 30 minutes will help release its evolved bouquet and soften the tannins.

Producer
Château Haut-Brion, located in Pessac-Léognan just outside Bordeaux, is one of the most historic and revered estates in the world of wine. Recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification—the only estate from Graves to receive this status—it has produced great wines for centuries, with references to its excellence dating back to the 17th century. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the estate’s red second wine, named in honor of Clarence Dillon, whose family has overseen the château since 1935 and greatly contributed to its modern renaissance. Under the stewardship of Domaine Clarence Dillon, Château Haut-Brion continues to set the standard for complexity, longevity and elegance in Graves, consistently earning top critical acclaim and reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of Bordeaux’s fine wine legacy.
