Description

The 2020 Château Gruaud-Larose Grand Cru Classé in magnum format is a benchmark Saint-Julien, uniting classic Left Bank structure with a strikingly refined, almost sensual elegance. Classified as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it showcases the estate’s outstanding gravel terroir and the precision that has defined its modern era under the Merlaut family. In magnum, this wine offers greater harmony, slower development, and an extended drinking window—ideal for the cellar or a special occasion.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Gruaud-Larose shows a deep, dark ruby core with a vivid purple rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is already expressive and layered, opening with ripe black cherry, mulberry, blackcurrant and plum preserve, then evolving towards hints of menthol, lilac, licorice, clove and subtle spice. Underneath lies a more savory, autumnal character of fallen leaves and tilled earth that anchors the fruit with classic Saint-Julien gravitas. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a tight, muscular core of densely packed ripe fruit wrapped in finely grained, ripe tannins. The freshness is well-judged, giving lift and definition to the dark berry profile while the oak is seamlessly integrated. As it moves across the palate, notes of cassis, dark cherry and plum are joined by graphite, sweet spice and a touch of dried herbs, leading into a long, spicy, and persistent finish. Already charming and almost seductive in its youth, this 2020 is structured for graceful aging—especially in magnum—where it should evolve beautifully from 2025 and comfortably develop complexity over two to three decades or more.

Production
Château Gruaud-Larose sits on one of Saint-Julien’s prime terraces, with vineyards rooted in deep, well-draining gravel deposits laid down by the Gironde some 700,000 years ago. This stony terroir naturally limits vigor, concentrating the fruit and favoring Cabernet Sauvignon of great aromatic purity and structure, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The estate has been farmed organically (with many parcels converted or in conversion), reflecting a focus on vineyard health and terroir transparency. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, then carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to polish the tannins and add subtle complexity without overpowering the fruit. The resulting wine is a meticulously crafted Saint-Julien that marries power, finesse and longevity.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Gruaud-Larose magnum is a natural partner for classic, refined dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, entrecôte or côte de boeuf, venison or other game birds, and slow-braised beef or veal cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushroom ragouts, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to let the aromatics fully unfold. Given the youth and structure of the 2020 vintage, decanting is strongly recommended: in magnum, plan on 2–3 hours in a decanter when drunk young to soften the tannins and reveal its layered complexity; as it matures, a gentle one-hour decant will be enough to remove any sediment and open up the bouquet.

Producer
Château Gruaud-Larose is one of the great historic names of Saint-Julien, ranked Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the landmark 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Long considered one of the key estates of the appellation—second only to the once-undivided Léoville properties—it has built a reputation for deeply structured yet elegantly perfumed wines that age superbly. Located behind Château Branaire-Ducru and next to Château Lagrange, the estate benefits from a superb gravel terroir that has shaped its identity for generations. Since 1997, Gruaud-Larose has been owned by the Merlaut family, who have invested heavily in vineyard care, cellar precision and a move toward organic viticulture. In recent years, vintages from this era have consistently garnered high critical acclaim, reasserting Gruaud-Larose as one of Saint-Julien’s most compelling and reliable Grand Cru Classé properties.
