Description
The 2020 Château Fleur Cardinale Edition Intergalactique Magnum is a striking, limited-release Saint‑Émilion Grand Cru Classé, crafted for collectors and serious Bordeaux lovers alike. Presented in a numbered series of just 2,000 magnums, each bottle is individually marked and delivered in its own wooden case, underscoring its rarity and gifting potential. Following on from the sought‑after “Hard Rock” 2018 and “Surf Session” 2019 special editions, Edition Intergalactique continues the estate’s playful, modern take on a deeply classic Right Bank style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2020 Fleur Cardinale shows a deep purple‑black hue, almost opaque at the core, that immediately signals concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive: aromas of plum preserve, chocolate‑dipped cherries and ripe mulberries are laced with sweet baking spices like cinnamon and star anise, alongside allspice, black truffle, lilac and a subtle, stony minerality.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full‑bodied with plush, velvety tannins and a beautifully composed core of black fruit. Ripe blackberries, black cherries and damson glide over the tongue, supported by exotic spice notes and a distinct mineral edge that brings definition and length. There is impressive freshness for such a rich wine, with a vibrant acidity that keeps the finish long, precise and lifted. In magnum format, this 2020 has significant aging potential; it can be enjoyed in its youth for its opulent fruit and aromatic complexity, but will truly blossom over 10–20 years, developing more truffle, tobacco and savory nuances with time.
Production
Château Fleur Cardinale is situated on one of the highest points of the clay‑limestone plateau of Saint‑Étienne‑de‑Lisse, along the northern slope of Saint‑Émilion. The 23.5‑hectare estate is divided into 64 individual plots with varied soils and subsoils, offering a mosaic of terroirs and exposures. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot (77%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (18%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%), mirroring the blend of this 2020 vintage. The estate is committed to environmentally responsible viticulture, with no chemical weed killers and an insecticide‑free policy, supporting biodiversity and healthier vines. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then vinified to highlight both the concentration of fruit and the finesse of the terroir. Careful extraction, temperature‑controlled fermentations, and élevage in quality French oak (typically a high proportion of new barrels) give the wine its signature depth, polish and age‑worthiness.
Food & Serving
This Saint‑Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, slow‑braised short ribs, duck breast with a dark fruit reduction, or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with truffle risotto, mushroom‑based dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended—around 1–2 hours for structure and aromatics to fully open in its current phase, and slightly less as it develops more bottle age. The magnum format makes it ideal for the table, slowly evolving in the decanter over the course of an evening.
Producer
Château Fleur Cardinale is a respected Grand Cru Classé estate in Saint‑Émilion, recognized for producing lush, modern‑styled wines that remain firmly anchored in classic Right Bank character. Over recent decades, the château has steadily risen in prominence, thanks to significant investment in the vineyards and cellar, and a philosophy that marries precision viticulture with careful, terroir‑focused winemaking. Its location on the high clay‑limestone plateau of Saint‑Étienne‑de‑Lisse grants it excellent drainage, exposure and natural ripeness—key factors behind the power and finesse of its wines. The estate’s dedication to sustainability and biodiversity, coupled with its series of creative limited editions such as “Hard Rock,” “Surf Session,” and now “Edition Intergalactique,” has made Château Fleur Cardinale both a benchmark in its appellation and a favorite among collectors seeking characterful, age‑worthy Saint‑Émilion.
