In the glass, the 2020 La Croix de Beaucaillou shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose opens with ripe blackcurrant and blackberry, layered with notes of cassis liqueur, black cherry, and plum, followed by graphite, cedar, crushed violets, and a hint of baking spice and cocoa from élevage in quality oak. On the palate, this is a polished, medium to full-bodied wine with fine-grained tannins and a vibrant core of dark fruit. Production
La Croix de Beaucaillou is crafted from vineyards in the heart of Saint-Julien, on the Médoc’s famed Garonne gravel terraces. These deep, well-draining gravel soils, interspersed with clay and sand, promote low vigor, excellent ripening, and the distinct graphite-mineral character so emblematic of top Left Bank Cabernet. The blend in 2020 is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot, all harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, typically by hand. After meticulous sorting, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vessels to ensure gentle extraction and purity of fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and élevage, adding complexity, polish, and structure before bottling.
