Description

2020 La Croix de Beaucaillou is the distinguished second wine of the famed Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, offering a polished, approachable expression of Saint-Julien’s elite terroir. Crafted with the same care and precision as the Grand Vin, it delivers the depth, structure and refinement that have made Ducru one of the Left Bank’s benchmark estates. This cuvée continues a long tradition of producing second wines that are anything but secondary, capturing the essence of Ducru’s gravelly vineyards in a more immediately accessible style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Croix de Beaucaillou shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with layers of blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum, followed by notes of cassis liqueur, violet, and graphite. Subtle tones of cedar, vanilla pod, mocha and a touch of cigar box reflect its élevage in quality French oak. On the palate, this Saint-Julien is supple yet firmly structured, with refined tannins that are ripe and silky rather than austere. Flavors of dark berries, crème de cassis and black cherries are framed by hints of pencil lead, baking spices and a discreet savory, mineral edge that speaks clearly of its gravel terroir. The finish is long, fresh and focused, with well-integrated acidity that promises excellent cellaring potential. While already enjoyable with a short decant, the 2020 will gain complexity and harmony over the next 8–15 years, and can easily age longer in good conditions.

Production
La Croix de Beaucaillou is sourced from selected parcels within Château Ducru-Beaucaillou’s prized holdings in Saint-Julien, on deep Garonne gravel with excellent drainage over a subsoil of clay and sand. This terroir naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot, delivering both aromatic finesse and structural backbone. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, typically by hand, with rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit enters the cellar. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to safeguard freshness and precision. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (with a significant proportion new), where it matures and gains complexity, polish and aromatic depth before bottling.

Food & Serving
The 2020 La Croix de Beaucaillou is a classic Bordeaux partner for fine cuisine, pairing beautifully with roasted lamb, ribeye steak, duck breast, and game birds, as well as rich dishes like beef short rib or mushroom and truffle risotto. It also works very well with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature farmhouse Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold, while more mature bottles can be decanted more gently to separate them from any sediment.

Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, located in the heart of Saint-Julien, is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) estates from the historic 1855 Classification. Its name, “Beaucaillou,” refers to the beautiful pebbles—deep gravel soils—that define its vineyards and underpin the estate’s hallmark elegance and minerality. Under the long-term stewardship of the Borie family, Ducru-Beaucaillou has become a reference point for powerful yet refined Médoc wines. La Croix de Beaucaillou, the estate’s distinguished second wine, allows wine lovers to experience the signature style and prestige of Ducru—depth, precision and longevity—at a more accessible level, consistently earning strong critical acclaim and a loyal following among Bordeaux enthusiasts worldwide.
