Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Ducru-Beaucaillou is an opaque purple-black, almost inky, hinting immediately at its concentration and depth. The nose unfolds slowly and seductively, revealing layers of crushed blackcurrants, wild blueberries and dark bramble fruit, then moving into nuances of chocolate-mint, star anise, dried rose petals, cedar shavings and fine tobacco from unsmoked cigars. With air, a refined graphite minerality and a touch of exotic spice emerge, adding complexity and lift. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied and sculpted, with muscular, pure black fruit running through the core: cassis, black cherry and blackberry intertwined with floral and mineral notes. The tannins are abundant yet beautifully ripe and ultra-fine grained, providing a firm but seamless frame. Fresh acidity keeps everything in perfect balance, driving a long, fragrant, and persistent finish that echoes cassis, spice and tobacco. While already impressive, this magnum really calls for patience; it will benefit from 8 or more years of cellaring and has the structure to age gracefully from roughly 2028 through 2060 and beyond, with the magnum format offering an even longer, more gradual evolution.

Production
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou sits on some of the most prized terroir in St Julien, its name referencing the “beaux cailloux” – the beautiful, large Günzian gravel stones that lie over deep gravel and clay subsoils, providing excellent drainage and ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, sourced from meticulously tended vines on these well-exposed parcels along the Gironde estuary. Harvesting is carried out with great care, typically by hand, allowing for strict selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the nuances of each plot, with gentle extraction to capture purity and finesse rather than sheer power. The wine is then matured for around 18 months in 100% new French oak barriques, adding subtle notes of spice, cedar and toast while respecting the wine’s remarkable fruit and mineral character.

It also pairs beautifully with earthy mushroom dishes, roasted root vegetables and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and finesse. In youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open; as it matures, a shorter decant of 1 hour will generally suffice, mainly to remove any sediment and gently aerate the wine.
