Description
The 2020 Château Cos d’Estournel is a majestic Saint-Estèphe that captures the château’s signature blend of power, exotic charm and precision. Crafted from 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, this Second Growth (2ème Grand Cru Classé) shows why Cos is considered one of the great estates of the Médoc. Awarded 98+/100 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, it stands out as one of the most compelling vintages in the modern history of the property, uniting opulence with remarkable finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cos d’Estournel is deeply concentrated and opaque purple, bordering on inky, with a dense, almost velvety appearance that hints at its intensity and structure. The nose is strikingly expressive and seductive: ripe blackcurrants and blackberries mingle with notes of black olive tapenade, smoked herbs, licorice and graphite, layered with nuances of toasted bread, cocoa and a subtle exotic spice that is very typical of Cos.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, powerful and richly textured, yet carried by a refined, almost weightless elegance. The Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, cassis and graphite, while the Merlot adds plush dark fruit, volume and a supple mid-palate. The tannins are firm but polished, coating the mouth with a fine-grained, silky grip, and the long finish is marked by dark berry fruit, savory herbs, subtle smoke and a persistent mineral freshness. This 2020 has outstanding aging potential: it will benefit from 8–10 years of cellaring and can easily evolve gracefully for 25–30 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Château Cos d’Estournel sits on a privileged gravel ridge at the southern edge of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the vineyards of Pauillac. The terroir is dominated by deep gravel over limestone and clay, providing excellent drainage while forcing the vines to root deeply, which contributes to the wine’s concentration and mineral backbone. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in small batches at optimal ripeness to ensure only the finest berries reach the cellar. Cos d’Estournel is renowned for its state-of-the-art, gravity-flow winery, designed so that from the moment of reception to the final stages of élevage, the wine moves gently without pumps, preserving purity and finesse. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by aging in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where the wine is matured and refined, gaining complexity, texture and aromatic depth.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Cos d’Estournel is an outstanding partner for rich, refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, veal with truffle jus, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, venison, wild mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gruyère. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and structural balance. For current drinking, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to allow the wine to open fully; in its maturity, a shorter decant of about 1 hour will be sufficient to remove sediment and reveal its tertiary nuances.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, classified as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Classification. Founded by the visionary Louis Gaspard d’Estournel—nicknamed the “Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe” for his love of the exotic and his Indo-inspired architecture—the château has long stood apart for both its striking pagoda-topped winery and its bold, characterful wines. Over the years, Cos has cemented its reputation as a benchmark for Saint-Estèphe, often rivaling the very best First Growths in quality and collectability. Today, the estate is known for its cutting-edge, gravity-fed winemaking facilities and relentless pursuit of precision, placing it at the forefront of innovation in Bordeaux while remaining deeply rooted in its prestigious terroir and storied past.
