Description

From one of Saint-Émilion’s tiniest and most privileged vineyards, the 2020 Château Clos Saint Martin Grand Cru Classé is a jewel of the limestone plateau. This Merlot‑driven red marries concentrated fruit with striking freshness and finesse, crafted in almost “haute‑couture” quantities from just 1.33 hectares of vines. Overlooking the village cemetery and bordering the famed Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse, Clos Saint Martin has long been prized for its silken texture, depth and remarkable sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Clos Saint Martin shows a deep, luminous ruby colour with purple highlights at the rim, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose opens with ripe black cherries and wild berries, followed by violets, crushed stone, subtle pencil shavings and a gentle whisper of sweet baking spices from its time in oak. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet poised Saint-Émilion, layered and finely textured. A succulent core of dark plum, black cherry and blackberry is wrapped in powdery, well‑integrated tannins and lifted by bright, limestone‑driven acidity. Notes of cocoa, graphite, licorice and fresh herbs add complexity toward a long, precise, mineral-inflected finish. While already seductive in its youth after a short decant, this 2020 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years in a good cellar.

Production
Château Clos Saint Martin comes from a beautifully situated 1.33‑hectare vineyard on the clay‑limestone slopes of the Saint-Émilion plateau, directly facing the village cemetery and adjoining Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse—prime terroir famed for its ability to produce wines of both power and elegance. The blend is predominantly Merlot, complemented by around 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, each variety benefiting from the cool, well-draining limestone subsoils that promote deep root systems and natural concentration. The grapes are harvested in four separate passes to capture optimal ripeness parcel by parcel, then vinified in small barrels rather than tanks—a deliberate choice given the tiny volumes, allowing incredibly precise micro‑vinification and gentle extraction. Aging in fine French oak (with a significant proportion of new barrels) polishes the tannins and adds subtle spice without overshadowing the vineyard’s distinctive mineral signature.

Food & Serving
This refined yet powerful Saint‑Émilion is a natural match for classic dishes such as roast lamb with garlic and herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or venison with a red‑wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle‑inflected cuisine, wild mushroom dishes, and hard or semi‑hard cheeses like aged Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture; decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the floral and mineral notes to fully emerge. As the wine ages, gentler decanting just before serving will be sufficient to separate it from any sediment.

Producer
Château Clos Saint Martin is one of the smallest Grand Cru Classé estates in Saint‑Émilion, yet it occupies a coveted position on the limestone plateau, surrounded by some of the appellation’s most illustrious neighbors. Its history is closely tied to the village itself, with vines rooted in the same clay‑limestone slopes that have defined Saint‑Émilion’s character for centuries. Over time, the estate has earned a reputation for producing remarkably concentrated, silky wines that punch far above their tiny production, consistently attracting critical acclaim and strong demand from collectors. As a Grand Cru Classé with a microscopically small vineyard, Clos Saint Martin embodies the essence of Right Bank terroir: artisanal, site‑driven and unapologetically focused on quality over quantity.
