Description
The 2020 Château Clinet is a powerful yet polished expression of Pomerol, showcasing the depth and finesse that has made this estate one of the appellation’s modern benchmarks. Crafted primarily from old-vine Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines opulent fruit with remarkable precision and structure. With roots dating back to the 17th century and a long-standing reputation for excellence, this flagship cuvée embodies the historic pedigree and contemporary refinement of one of Pomerol’s most admired châteaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Clinet is an almost opaque purple-black, hinting immediately at its concentration and youth. The nose opens with a rush of ripe black plum, blackberry and blueberry, layered with notes of dark cherry, licorice and cocoa, supported by subtle hints of violets, graphite and a touch of sweet spice from the generous new oak. As it unfolds, more nuanced aromas emerge—black raspberry, a whisper of vanilla pod and earthy undertones that speak clearly of its Pomerol origins.
The palate is full-bodied and richly fruited, yet beautifully composed. Dense black and blue fruits—plum, blackberry and blueberry coulis—are wrapped in velvety, finely grained tannins, giving a plush but not heavy texture. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and lifted, preventing the richness from becoming overwhelming. Layers of dark chocolate, espresso, licorice and a gentle smokiness from the barriques carry through to a long, persistent finish. Still in its youth, this 2020 has substantial aging potential; it will benefit from 5–8 years of cellaring and can evolve gracefully for 20+ years under proper conditions.
Production
Château Clinet’s vineyards lie on the plateau of Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where a prized mix of gravel, clay and iron-rich subsoils gives Merlot its distinctive power and perfume. The estate covers around 11 hectares, planted predominantly with Merlot, complemented by smaller parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that add structure and aromatic complexity. Grapes for the 2020 vintage were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and meticulously sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine was then aged for 16 months in French oak barriques, approximately 75% new, using the OXOLINE system to gently manage the barrels and limit stirring. This careful élevage enhances texture, depth and complexity while maintaining precision and freshness in the finished wine.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Château Clinet is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herb crust, beef tenderloin, slow-braised short ribs or venison with a red wine reduction. It also shines alongside classic French cuisine—duck breast, truffled poultry or mushroom-based dishes—and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; as it matures and the tannins soften, a shorter decant or simply allowing it to breathe in the glass will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Clinet’s origins trace back to the 17th century, when it formed part of the larger Château de la Couronne estate established in the 16th century. It emerged as an independent property under the Constant family in the early 18th century and later rose to prominence under the Arnaud family during the 19th century, when its wines began to be recognized for their exceptional quality. Today, Clinet is firmly established as one of Pomerol’s leading producers, renowned for powerful yet refined wines that faithfully express the appellation’s unique terroir. The estate has earned significant critical acclaim over multiple decades, with standout vintages such as 1989, 1990, 2009, 2010 and 2015 cementing its status among collectors and connoisseurs. In addition to its flagship Grand Vin, Château Clinet also crafts the more approachable ‘Ronan by Clinet,’ offering a taste of the estate’s style in a softer, earlier-drinking form.
