Description

2020 Château Clerc Milon Grand Cru Classé Pauillac is a poised, deeply structured Left Bank Bordeaux that beautifully captures the elegance and power of this exceptional vintage. Crafted from a classic Pauillac blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it delivers both immediate charm and tremendous aging potential. As a Fifth Growth estate under the stewardship of the Rothschild family, Clerc Milon has become one of the most sought-after names in Pauillac, offering classically styled claret with a distinctly polished, contemporary edge.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Clerc Milon shows a crystal-clear garnet-red color with youthful violet highlights at the rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The aromatic profile is refined and layered: ripe morello cherries and blackcurrants lead, followed by hints of dark berries, then subtle accents of licorice, toast, and a touch of cocoa, all wrapped in a lifted floral and gently spicy bouquet. On the palate, the wine starts out silky and poised, quickly revealing the power of its finely sculpted tannins. Juicy red and black fruit—think morello cherry, blackcurrant, and plum—meld with notes of dark chocolate, dried flowers, and a whisper of graphite and cedar. There’s a remarkable balance between richness and freshness, with a cool, minty edge that brightens the long, stylish finish. The structure and definition suggest outstanding aging potential: while approachable after a few hours of aeration in its youth, it will truly shine over 15–25+ years in a good cellar, gaining complexity, tertiary nuances, and even greater harmony.

Production
Château Clerc Milon sits on the Mousset ridge in the northeast of the Pauillac appellation, overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its 41 hectares of vines are planted on gentle slopes that promote excellent natural drainage and optimal sun exposure, while the nearby river moderates temperatures, protecting the vines from spring frost, reducing hail risk, and cooling the vineyards in summer. The soils are a classic Médoc mix of sandy gravel overlaying clay-limestone, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordelais counterparts. The vineyard is planted with five traditional varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenère—with an impressive average vine age of around 53 years and very high density (8,500–10,000 vines per hectare), naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. In 2020, a mild winter and early, even budbreak were followed by a warm, at times hot, growing season, with timely August rains ensuring even véraison and perfect fruit health. Harvested by parcel between 9 and 28 September under ideal conditions, the grapes reached full ripeness at modest yields, resulting in intensely flavored, beautifully balanced wines with powerful but seamless tannins and striking freshness. Traditional vinification in temperature-controlled vats and élevage in carefully selected oak barrels (a significant portion new) further refined the tannins and enhanced complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Pauillac is a natural match for classic, richly flavored dishes: roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or venison with juniper and dark berry jus. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, roasted root vegetables, wild mushrooms, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or a well-aged cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems. In its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften; as it matures, a gentle 30–60 minute decant will be enough to remove sediment and let the wine express its full complexity.

Producer
Château Clerc Milon is a Grand Cru Classé estate from the famed 1855 Classification, nestled in Pauillac amidst some of the most illustrious names in Bordeaux. The property takes its name from the Clerc family and the hamlet of Milon, and its modern history is closely tied to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who acquired the estate in 1970 and invested heavily in the vineyards and cellar, elevating quality to a new level. Today, as part of the Rothschild portfolio alongside Château Mouton Rothschild and Château d’Armailhac, Clerc Milon is recognized as one of Pauillac’s rising stars, consistently overdelivering for its classification. Its old vines, meticulously farmed vineyards, and precision-driven winemaking have earned it a reputation for producing wines that combine classical Pauillac structure with a seductive, polished texture and impressive longevity.
