Description

The 2020 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval Blanc Magnum is a rare dry white from one of Saint-Émilion’s most revered estates, crafted in a generous large format for extended aging and shared enjoyment. Produced in very limited quantities, this refined Bordeaux Blanc marries intensity with striking precision and freshness, capturing the estate’s hallmark elegance in white. As the white sibling to the legendary red Cheval Blanc, it has quickly become one of the most coveted modern white wines on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Petit Cheval Blanc shines a luminous pale gold with green reflections, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose is immediately expressive and layered, with notes of lemon confit, white peach, and ripe citrus interwoven with white flowers, passionfruit, and a discreet touch of well-judged oak spice. Hints of fresh herbs, crushed stone, and a saline edge add complexity and lift. On the palate, this is rich, creamy, and beautifully expansive, yet defined by a spine of racy acidity that keeps everything focused and effortlessly balanced. Texturally it is silky and almost glyceric, with citrus oil, passionfruit, and stone-fruit flavors carried by a fine, chalky tension. Subtle toast and vanilla from barrel aging are perfectly integrated, supporting rather than dominating the fruit. With aeration, the wine gains even more freshness and precision—an excellent sign for longevity. In magnum format, it should evolve gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining complexity while retaining its remarkable finesse.

Production
Le Petit Cheval Blanc is sourced from carefully selected parcels on the Cheval Blanc estate, where gravel, sand, and clay over a complex subsoil lend both aromatic purity and textural depth to the white varieties. The blend in 2020 is dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, supported by Sémillon for breadth and nuance. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, plot by plot, to capture each terroir’s character. Vinification takes place in Cheval Blanc’s state-of-the-art chai, designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc, where 50 specially shaped tronconic concrete vats allow for precise micro-vinification by parcel. Gravity-flow handling minimizes pumping, preserving delicacy and aromatic definition, while carefully calibrated oak élevage adds structure and complexity without masking the wine’s crystalline fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Le Petit Cheval Blanc pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as turbot, sole, or halibut in beurre blanc, seared scallops, lobster, and langoustines, as well as fine sushi and sashimi. It also excels with roast chicken, veal in light cream sauces, asparagus, and subtly truffled dishes, along with aged hard cheeses or delicate goat’s cheese. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics to fully unfold. In magnum, decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving is recommended to let the wine open up and show its full aromatic range and textural finesse.

Producer
Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most iconic names in Bordeaux, standing alongside Pétrus and Ausone as a legend of the Right Bank. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A in Saint-Émilion for decades, the estate is renowned for its uniquely complex mosaic of terroirs and its long-lived, finely etched red wines. Today it is owned by Belgian industrialist Albert Frère and Bernard Arnault, with Pierre Lurton—also at the helm of Château d’Yquem—overseeing the winemaking. The ultra-modern cellar, a significant investment in quality, allows for unparalleled precision through gravity-fed vinification and plot-by-plot micro-vinification in specially designed concrete vats. Le Petit Cheval Blanc, the estate’s dry white, has rapidly earned a reputation as one of Bordeaux’s most sophisticated and sought-after white wines.
