Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Calon-Ségur shows a very dark, almost opaque purple color, hinting at both youth and density. The nose is complex and layered, opening with pristine black fruit—black cherries, blackberry and cassis—wrapped in notes of fresh herbs, fine tobacco, graphite, and a subtle roasted coffee nuance. With a swirl, more delicate aromas emerge: cassis liqueur, red berries, fresh mint, pencil shavings, violets and rose petals. On the palate, the wine is pure, concentrated and poised, with a core of ripe black fruit framed by vibrant acidity and firm, finely grained tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon character (81%) drives the structure and length, while Merlot adds a touch of suppleness and charm, Cabernet Franc lifts the aromatics, and a hint of Petit Verdot brings extra depth and spice. The finish is long, linear and refined, with lingering notes of dark berries, florals and cool minerality. In magnum, this 2020 has outstanding aging potential: it will start to drink beautifully after 8–10 years from vintage and can evolve gracefully for 25 years or more, depending on cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Calon-Ségur lies in the northern Médoc appellation of Saint-Estèphe, where deep gravelly soils over clay and limestone give Cabernet Sauvignon exceptional ripeness, structure and freshness. The estate’s old-vine parcels, carefully managed for low yields, are harvested by hand, with strict selection carried out both in the vineyard and at the winery. The 2020 blend is Cabernet Sauvignon 81%, Merlot 7%, Cabernet Franc 11% and Petit Verdot 1%. After gentle extraction and temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to polish the tannins and integrate the complex aromatic profile. Bottled in magnum, this larger format allows a slower, more nuanced evolution in the cellar, preserving freshness and purity for longer.

Food & Serving
This is a classic, structured Bordeaux that pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes: roasted or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, game birds, or slow-braised short ribs. It also complements dishes with earthy components such as wild mushrooms, truffle sauces, or root vegetables, and can be an excellent match for aged hard cheeses like Comté or old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In magnum, decanting is recommended: 2–3 hours ahead for a young bottle to allow the aromatics and tannins to open, or around 1 hour for a more mature bottle.
