In the glass, the 2020 Château Bellevue-Mondotte presents a nearly opaque, deep garnet-purple hue with a dark, inky core that immediately hints at its concentration. On the nose, it is intense and layered: ripe black plum, blackberry and black cherry mingle with notes of cassis, violets and crushed stone. With air, more complex nuances appear—subtle graphite, mocha, licorice, clove and fine French oak, all underpinned by a cool, chalky mineral impression typical of Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, with a dense, velvety core of dark fruit framed by firm, finely grained tannins. Ripe blackberries, plum compote and blackcurrant are lifted by hints of dark chocolate, espresso, baking spices and a persistent, stony minerality. The structure is powerful yet balanced, with fresh acidity giving definition and energy to the long, elegant finish. While already impressive in its youth, this 2020 clearly has significant aging potential; over the next 10–20 years, it will gain additional complexity, soften its tannins and reveal even more nuance from its exceptional terroir.

Production
Château Bellevue-Mondotte’s 2.5-hectare vineyard lies on the renowned limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, where thin clay and limestone soils, excellent drainage and ideal exposure combine to produce intensely flavored, small-berried grapes. Planted predominantly with old-vine Merlot (around 90%), complemented by small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the vines average about 50 years of age, naturally limiting yields and increasing concentration. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit enters the cellar. Vinification is carried out with great care to capture both power and finesse—temperature-controlled fermentations, gentle extraction and a focus on purity of fruit. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, with a high proportion of new oak, allowing it to gain texture, complexity and structure while preserving the underlying freshness and mineral character of the limestone terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a superb wine for rich, flavourful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats such as ribeye steak, lamb rack, venison or slow-braised beef, and is equally at home alongside game birds, truffle dishes and hearty stews. Mature hard cheeses and aged, nutty cow’s or sheep’s milk cheeses also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and structure. For young vintages like the 2020, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the layered aromas of black fruit, spice and minerality to fully emerge.
