Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Carillon de l'Angélus shows a deep, garnet-purple hue with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose is expressive and layered, offering notes of ripe black cherries, crushed blackberries and plum, interwoven with violets, graphite, delicate cedar, and a touch of baking spice and cocoa. On the palate, this is supple yet structured, with a core of dark berry and red currant fruit framed by fine-grained tannins. The mid-palate is plush and concentrated, balanced by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and precise. Subtle hints of mocha, tobacco leaf and toasted oak linger on a long, elegant finish. While already inviting in its youth, the 2020 has the backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture with a few years in bottle.

Production
Le Carillon de l'Angélus is drawn from the clay-limestone and clay-sand soils of Saint-Émilion, where the Merlot and Cabernet vines benefit from excellent drainage, exposure and natural freshness in the subsoil. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with careful parcel-by-parcel selection to capture optimal ripeness and purity of fruit. After sorting, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse over power. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels (a lower proportion new than the grand vin), allowing the wine to gain texture, aromatic complexity and polish while retaining its vibrant, approachable character.

This 2020 Le Carillon de l'Angélus is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast lamb, grilled or pan-seared beef, duck breast, veal chops, and game birds, as well as richer poultry dishes with mushrooms or truffle. It also works well with earthy vegetarian dishes such as lentil casseroles, mushroom risotto, or roasted root vegetables with herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Young bottles benefit from 45–60 minutes in a decanter to soften the tannins and let the bouquet fully open.
