Description
The 2020 Château Angélus Clos du Milieu Magnum is a striking, cellar-worthy red from one of Saint-Émilion’s most revered estates, presented in the generous magnum format for truly special occasions. From a stellar Bordeaux vintage, this wine combines depth, finesse, and precision, capturing the modern sophistication of Angélus while remaining firmly rooted in its Right Bank heritage. The larger bottle size ensures a slower, more graceful evolution, making it an ideal choice for collectors and for the table.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Clos du Milieu shows a deep, saturated ruby to garnet core with youthful purple hues at the rim, indicating both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with a refined aromatic profile: ripe black cherry, cassis, and plum, layered with notes of violets, graphite, fine cedar, and a touch of cocoa and baking spice from quality oak.
On the palate, this is polished and layered, with a supple, velvety texture supported by firm but beautifully integrated tannins. Dark berry fruit is at the core, framed by hints of licorice, crushed stone, and tobacco leaf, with a long, persistent finish that marries fruit, freshness, and subtle oak. The 2020 vintage’s balance of ripeness and acidity gives this wine impressive aging potential; in magnum, it should develop gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, forest floor, and leather over time.
Production
Clos du Milieu is sourced from select parcels within the Saint-Émilion terroir that Château Angélus is famous for, rooted in clay and limestone soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to preserve fruit integrity, with careful sorting in the cellar to retain only perfectly ripe berries. Vinification at Angélus prioritizes precision and purity: temperature-controlled fermentations in a combination of stainless steel and/or concrete vats, gentle extraction to capture fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by maturation in high-quality French oak barrels. This approach allows the wine to express both the power and elegance that define top Right Bank Bordeaux.
Food & Serving
This magnum of 2020 Clos du Milieu is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or a slow-braised veal or beef stew. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or a well-matured farmhouse cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to show the wine’s full aromatic range and structure. For current drinking, decant 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open up; in its mature phase, a shorter decant will usually suffice to remove any sediment and gently awaken the aromas.
