Description
The 2020 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion is a benchmark Right Bank Bordeaux, uniting luxurious power with remarkable finesse. This vintage showcases the estate’s signature blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, delivering a wine that is both opulent and finely chiselled. Elevated to the rarefied “Classé A” tier in 2012, Angélus stands alongside the very greatest names of Saint-Émilion, and the 2020 is a compelling expression of its historic terroir and meticulous craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Angélus is brilliant and deeply concentrated, with an almost black, opaque core edged by dark purple highlights—an immediate visual cue to the perfect ripeness and intensity of the fruit. The nose opens with a cascade of juicy black fruits: wild cherry, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, layered with floral tones of peony and violet, and underpinned by subtle spice, graphite and a touch of truffle.
On the palate, this is all silk and cashmere—full-bodied, yet impeccably refined. The sweet, ripe fruit sits at the centre: luminous blue and black berries supported by superfine, polished tannins that feel effortlessly smooth. There is impressive concentration, but also lift and precision, carried by a vibrant mineral thread and perfectly judged acidity. Notes of dark forest fruits, cocoa, exotic spice and a hint of savory earth unfold in waves, leading to a very long, harmonious finish. Still youthful and tightly woven, it will reward patience and has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully over 20–30 years or more in a good cellar, gaining additional complexity, truffle and tertiary nuances with time.
Production
Château Angélus lies on the south-facing slopes and foot of Saint-Émilion, in a natural amphitheatre that captures warmth and accelerates ripening. The soils combine clay and limestone with sand-clay-limestone parcels—Merlot is rooted predominantly in the clay-rich flanks, while Cabernet Franc thrives on the better-drained, chalk and sand-clay-limestone at the foot of the slope. This balance ensures excellent water and mineral regulation, with natural drainage from the incline. Harvest for the 2020 vintage took place between 15 and 30 September, with careful plot-by-plot picking at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the Merlot and Cabernet Franc are vinified separately, allowing each parcel’s character to be expressed before meticulous blending. Modern precision is married with traditional Bordeaux savoir-faire, resulting in a wine of remarkable purity, precision and textural finesse.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Château Angélus is a natural partner for refined cuisine: think roasted lamb with herbs, tournedos of beef with truffle jus, venison or other game birds, as well as rich dishes featuring mushrooms, foie gras, or black truffle. Mature hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or a well-aged English Cheddar also complement its depth and structure. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing the alcohol or tannins. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open; as it matures, a shorter decant of 30–60 minutes will be sufficient to free its bouquet and soften the edges.
Producer
Château Angélus is one of Saint-Émilion’s most iconic estates, stewarded by the Boüard de Laforest family for eight generations. Today, the domaine is led by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal and her cousin Thierry Grenié-de Boüard, with Stéphanie representing the third woman to oversee the property in its long history. Under the passionate vision of Hubert de Boüard, Angélus rose to global prominence and, in 2012, was elevated to the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” category—placing it among a handful of elite Saint-Émilion châteaux. Renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, its embrace of both tradition and innovation, and a style that marries richness with remarkable elegance, Angélus has become one of the most sought-after wines in the world.
