Description

The 2020 Cathiard Family Estate Cathiard Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a polished, single-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet that marries French heritage with Californian power. Crafted by the owners of Bordeaux’s famed Château Smith Haut Lafitte, it offers a luxurious, terroir-driven expression of Rutherford and St. Helena fruit. This historic estate, founded in 1885 and reborn under the Cathiard family in 2020, channels more than a century of Napa viticultural history into a contemporary, world-class Cabernet.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple hue, with a vibrant rim that hints at its youthful energy. The nose is dense and layered, leading with dark plum, blackcurrant and blackberry compote, supported by notes of freshly turned earth, Valrhona dark chocolate, pipe tobacco, graphite and warm baking spices. Subtle hints of cedar, espresso and dried flowers emerge with air, adding complexity and refinement. On the palate, the wine is rich and broad yet finely sculpted, offering a core of ripe black fruits wrapped in seamlessly integrated, velvety tannins. Flavors of dark plum, cassis and black cherry are laced with cocoa, licorice, clove and a touch of savory herb, all lifted by a focused, vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and precise. The mouthfeel is complete and harmonious, building to a long, persistent finish that showcases the distinctive character of the Cathiard Vineyard’s hillside terroir. While already generous in its youth, this 2020 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 15–20 years, gaining further nuance and secondary complexity with time in bottle.

Production
Cathiard Vineyard sits at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains within the renowned Rutherford and St. Helena AVAs, an area where vines have been cultivated for over a century. The site’s well-drained, gravelly and alluvial soils, combined with warm days and cooling evening breezes from the mountains, produce intensely flavored yet finely balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested from the estate’s oldest hillside parcels, then carefully destemmed and sorted so that only the finest whole berries proceed to vinification. The must is transferred by gravity into fermentation vessels and allowed a cold soak of up to five days to enhance color and aromatic extraction. Throughout fermentation, gentle pump-overs and punch-downs are used to refine tannin structure and draw out complexity without harshness. After roughly 30 days in tank, the wine is drained and pressed, then undergoes natural malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels, marrying the purity of the fruit with subtle, integrated oak character in a style closely aligned with the Cathiard family’s philosophy in Bordeaux.

Food & Serving
This Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary, braised short ribs, or dry-aged beef. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-inflected dishes, mushroom ragout and hard or semi-hard cheeses like aged Comté, Pecorino or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic depth and textural finesse. For early drinking, decant 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant to remove any sediment and gently awaken the bouquet will be sufficient.

Producer
Cathiard Family Estate is the Napa Valley outpost of the Cathiard family, renowned proprietors of Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux’s Pessac-Léognan. The Rutherford property traces its roots back to 1885, when Scottish brothers James and William Rennie founded the original estate, making it one of Napa’s historic vineyard sites. After changing hands following Prohibition and again in the 1970s, the estate entered a new era in 2020, when it was acquired by the Cathiards, who brought with them a deep commitment to sustainable viticulture, meticulous vineyard work and classically informed yet forward-thinking winemaking. Today, with 25 hectares under vine and a philosophy grounded in respect for nature and terroir, Cathiard Family Estate is poised to become one of Napa’s most compelling voices, bridging the elegance and savoir-faire of Bordeaux with the intensity and character of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
