Description

The 2020 Bruno Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Magnum is a benchmark white Burgundy for those who value precision, elegance and depth. Sourced from old-vine Chardonnay on a prime Premier Cru slope, this 1.5L format offers both immediate pleasure and outstanding aging potential. In true Bruno Colin style, it captures the fine line between richness and tension that has made Chassagne-Montrachet one of the great white wine appellations of the world.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a luminous pale gold color with green reflections, signaling both youth and vibrancy. The nose is expressive yet refined, opening with white flowers, citrus zest and ripe stone fruits, layered with notes of pear, white peach, acacia blossom and a touch of honeysuckle. As it unfurls, subtle hints of toasted hazelnut, fresh almond, wet stone and a delicate, chalky minerality emerge, framed by discreet, well-integrated oak. On the palate, the 2020 Les Chaumées is both ample and tightly focused: a silky, medium to full-bodied texture carries juicy citrus, peach and apple fruit, balanced by a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. There is a fine, saline backbone that runs through the wine, giving it precision and length, with a lingering finish marked by chalk, sea spray and gentle spice from the 350L barrels. The magnum format further enhances its aging curve: while already approachable and pleasurable in its youth, this wine will evolve gracefully over 8–15+ years, gaining complexity, creaminess and additional tertiary nuances of honey, brioche and nutty depth.

Production
Les Chaumées is a high-quality Premier Cru site that borders Saint-Aubin, positioned just above the renowned 1er Cru Les Vergers. Here, Bruno Colin farms 0.42 hectares of Chardonnay rooted in classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils, which naturally confer both power and finesse, as well as the distinctive saline, mineral character that defines top Chassagne-Montrachet. The vines—planted in 1956, 1988 and 2003—offer a mix of old-vine concentration and younger-vine vibrancy. Harvest is carried out manually, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are brought to the cellar. Vinification follows a traditional Burgundian approach with a strong focus on purity: gentle pressing, fermentation and élevage in 350L oak barrels, of which only about 15–20% are new, to support rather than dominate the fruit. The wine matures for around 12 months in barrel, followed by a further 4–6 months in tank or older wood before bottling, allowing the components to knit together and the terroir expression to sharpen.

Food & Serving
This Premier Cru Chassagne-Montrachet is a versatile partner for refined cuisine, particularly dishes that highlight fine textures and subtle richness. It shines with classic pairings such as butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light cream or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole meunière, and roasted monkfish. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken with morels, veal in a delicate cream sauce, or truffled risotto, as well as aged but not overly pungent cheeses like Comté, Beaufort or an artisanal Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to preserve freshness while allowing the aromatics to open; in magnum especially, decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving can help the wine stretch its legs, revealing greater complexity and a more seamless texture.

Producer
Bruno Colin comes from one of the great family dynasties of Chassagne-Montrachet, with several generations of winemaking knowledge rooted in the Côte de Beaune. After working within the broader Colin family domaine, he established his own estate, focusing on precision, terroir expression and a contemporary yet classically Burgundian style. Today, the domaine farms prime parcels across some of Burgundy’s most revered appellations, including Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, with a reputation for wines that are elegant, finely etched and impeccably balanced. Bruno Colin’s approach—meticulous work in the vines, careful selection at harvest, and judicious use of oak—has made his bottlings, particularly his Premier and Grand Crus, highly sought after by collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts around the world, and an important reference point in modern Chassagne-Montrachet.
