Description
The 2020 Bouchard Père & Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the most revered crus in the Côte de Beaune. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay, this cuvée captures the tension, precision, and depth that have made Chevalier-Montrachet legendary among collectors. The warm yet balanced 2020 vintage adds an extra layer of concentration and opulence while preserving the vineyard’s hallmark elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a luminous, pale gold hue with green reflections that hint at both youth and intensity. The nose is complex and refined, unfurling aromas of white flowers, lemon zest, ripe pear, and crisp green apple, intertwined with notes of crushed stone, hazelnut, and a delicate touch of vanilla and toast from fine French oak.
On the palate, this wine is simultaneously powerful and weightless, with a focused, mineral-driven core. Expect layers of citrus and orchard fruits—Meyer lemon, white peach, and pear—supported by hints of almond cream, fresh butter, and subtle spice. The acidity is vibrant and linear, giving great precision and length, while the texture is silky and tightly knit, promising superb development. While already compelling in its youth, this Grand Cru has excellent aging potential; stored carefully, it can evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining deeper nutty, honeyed, and truffled nuances with time.
Production
Chevalier-Montrachet is one of Burgundy’s most exalted white wine sites, perched on the upper slopes above Le Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune. Here, the Chardonnay vines grow in thin, stony soils rich in limestone and marl, with excellent drainage and a cooler exposition that promotes finesse and minerality. Bouchard Père & Fils harvests the fruit by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to ensure only pristine grapes are used. The must is gently pressed and then fermented, primarily in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak to add complexity without overshadowing the terroir. The wine is typically aged for around 12–18 months on fine lees, with careful bâtonnage as needed, resulting in a Grand Cru that expresses both the chiseled structure of the site and the richness of the vintage.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is a superb partner for refined dishes where texture and nuance matter. Pair it with butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole in a delicate beurre blanc, or roast chicken with morels and a cream sauce. It also excels alongside veal in light jus, fine poultry, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and precise structure. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up, but avoid overly long aeration to preserve its tension and freshness.
