Description
Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2018 Bernard Moreau Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered crus. This is Chardonnay at its most refined and mineral, uniting crystalline precision with depth and longevity. Offered in magnum, it is particularly well-suited for cellaring and for sharing on truly special occasions. Chevalier-Montrachet is famed for producing some of the most ethereal and ageworthy white wines in the world, and Bernard Moreau is widely respected for an approach that balances intensity with elegance. The 2018 vintage, with its ripe yet finely structured profile, highlights the site’s high-altitude character and the domaine’s deft touch, resulting in a Grand Cru that is both seductive in youth and built to evolve beautifully over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a luminous pale gold colour with subtle green highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with refined aromas of white flowers, lemon zest, and ripe orchard fruits such as pear and white peach, layered with notes of chalky minerality, hazelnut, fresh butter and a delicate hint of smoke and brioche from expertly judged oak.
On the palate, the wine is simultaneously powerful and weightless, with a driven, linear core of acidity that lifts the ripe fruit. Flavours of citrus oil, pear, and stone fruit mingle with crushed stone, saline notes, and a fine, toasty nuance. The texture is silky yet tightly knit, with a long, precise and persistent finish that fans out with lingering minerality and subtle spice. In magnum, its aging potential is considerable: while already impressive after a decant, it will reward patience over 10–20+ years, gaining additional complexity, honeyed nuances, and greater integration of fruit, oak, and minerality.
Production
Chevalier-Montrachet sits high on the slope above Le Montrachet, with thin, stony limestone soils that naturally limit yields and confer exceptional tension and minerality to the wines. The higher elevation and exposure favour slow, even ripening, preserving acidity and aromatic finesse even in warmer vintages like 2018. Bernard Moreau typically works with meticulous, hand-harvested fruit, selecting only the healthiest, perfectly ripe clusters in the vineyard and on sorting tables. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels, with a careful balance of new and seasoned wood to enhance, rather than mask, the terroir expression. Extended lees aging with occasional bâtonnage builds texture and complexity, while a thoughtful, restrained approach to fining and filtration helps preserve purity, precision, and the wine’s natural energy.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is best showcased with refined, high-quality cuisine that matches its depth and elegance. Ideal pairings include butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, and roasted poultry with morel or truffle cream sauce. It also shines alongside rich shellfish dishes, delicate veal preparations, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F), allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass as it opens. Given its concentration and youth, decanting for 45–90 minutes is recommended, particularly in magnum, to fully reveal the layered aromatics and the wine’s intricate, mineral-driven finish.
Producer
Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils, based in Chassagne-Montrachet, is widely regarded as one of the leading estates in the Côte de Beaune, known for exquisitely detailed and terroir-transparent Chardonnay. The domaine’s history stretches back to the early 19th century, with successive generations gradually assembling and refining an enviable patchwork of vineyard holdings across Chassagne and neighbouring appellations. Over the last few decades, Bernard Moreau and his sons have earned a reputation for combining traditional Burgundian craftsmanship with a thoughtful, modern sensitivity in the vineyard and cellar. Their wines are prized by collectors and sommeliers for their purity, balance, and ageworthiness, and their work in Grand Cru sites such as Chevalier-Montrachet has helped reinforce Burgundy’s global reputation for producing some of the world’s most profound white wines.
