Description
The 2020 Benoît Ente Bourgogne Golden Jubilee is a finely crafted white Burgundy that distills the precision and purity this revered grower is known for into a beautifully accessible cuvée. Sourced from carefully tended vineyards in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, it offers a refined, terroir-driven expression of Chardonnay with both immediate charm and underlying structure. This cuvée stands out as a “golden” celebration of the Ente family’s meticulous approach, uniting mineral tension, vibrant fruit and judicious élevage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bourgogne Golden Jubilee shows a luminous pale gold hue with greenish reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose opens with citrus zest, green apple and white peach, layered with notes of pear, lemon curd and delicate white flowers. Subtle undertones of crushed stone, fresh almonds and a faint creamy nuance reveal the wine’s Burgundian pedigree and careful aging.
On the palate, the wine is precise and lively, with bright, natural acidity framing flavors of citrus, orchard fruits and a touch of ripe stone fruit. A fine, chalky minerality runs through the mid-palate, giving structure and length, while a discreet hint of brioche and hazelnut emerges with air, reflecting its time in large foudres and neutral vessels rather than overt new oak. The finish is long, saline and mouthwatering, suggesting very good aging potential for a regional Bourgogne—expect it to drink beautifully over the next 5–7 years, gaining additional complexity and texture with a few years in bottle.
Production
Rooted in the classic terroirs of the Côte de Beaune, Benoît Ente’s vineyards lie mainly in and around Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, where thin, limestone-rich soils and cool exposures yield Chardonnay of notable finesse and mineral drive. The estate is committed to sustainable viticulture, working with low yields and careful vineyard management to preserve natural acidity and aromatic purity. Harvesting is done by hand, and whole, uncrushed bunches are pressed slowly over more than three hours with minimal rotations, extracting fine dry extract while maintaining a low pH and vibrant structure. The wine is then aged for around 18 months in a mix of large foudres, 600-liter barrels and inert vessels such as 228-liter glass “wine globes,” with no fining or filtration, allowing the vintage and terroir to speak clearly without the imprint of heavy new oak.
Food & Serving
This Bourgogne Golden Jubilee is a versatile food wine that shines alongside refined yet simply prepared dishes. Think oysters, scallops, poached or grilled white fish, sushi, roasted chicken, veal in light cream sauces, or vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, or mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with mild to medium cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère and young goat’s cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression; if served too cold, give it a few minutes in the glass. A brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more texture and nuance on the palate.
Producer
Founded in 1990, Benoît Ente’s estate has become one of the most respected small domaines in Burgundy, particularly for its precise, terroir-driven white wines. Coming from a family deeply rooted in Burgundian viticulture—closely related to the renowned Arnaud Ente—Benoît took over the family holdings and gradually refined his approach, focusing on sustainable practices, low yields and meticulous work both in the vineyard and the cellar. With nearly 6 hectares mainly in Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, and an additional parcel in Chassagne-Montrachet, the domaine has built a reputation for wines that combine purity, energy and ageworthiness. Benoît’s move towards larger foudres, 600-liter barrels and innovative glass “vinkloder,” as well as the abandonment of traditional 228-liter barriques, underscores his commitment to highlighting terroir over oak, making the estate a benchmark for modern, thoughtful white Burgundy.
