Description

The 2020 Benjamin Leroux Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum is an exquisite expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine vineyards, captured in a format built for grand occasions. Crafted from old-vine Chardonnay in the fabled Bâtard-Montrachet climat, this magnum offers both immediate indulgence and remarkable aging potential. Benjamin Leroux, one of Burgundy’s most respected modern vignerons, brings precision and finesse to a terroir traditionally known for its power and depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Bâtard-Montrachet shimmers a luminous, pale gold with green reflections, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is complex and layered: ripe citrus and lemon oil unfold into white peach, Mirabelle plum, and pear, wrapped in notes of toasted hazelnut, fresh almond, and delicate brioche. Subtle hints of acacia blossom, chalk, flint, and a touch of buttered pastry add further dimension as the wine opens. On the palate, the 2020 vintage shows the richness and authority expected from Bâtard-Montrachet, but with Leroux’s hallmark tension and precision. A powerful, mouth-filling core of stone fruit and citrus is framed by vivid acidity and a strong mineral spine, giving both volume and lift. The texture is simultaneously creamy and tightly coiled, with nuances of salted butter, grilled nuts, and fine oak seamlessly integrated into the fruit. The finish is long, saline, and persistent, suggesting significant capacity to evolve in bottle. In magnum, and from a structured year like 2020, this wine will reward careful cellaring for 10–20+ years, gradually gaining even more complexity and aromatic nuance.

Production
Sourced from the legendary Grand Cru vineyard of Bâtard-Montrachet on the Côte de Beaune, this wine draws its character from limestone-rich soils with a mix of clay that lends both power and depth. The site’s south and southeast exposures capture generous sunlight, while cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic precision—key to balancing the inherent richness of this appellation. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure perfect selection in the vineyard, then gently pressed to extract pure, refined juice. Fermentation typically takes place in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, adding subtle toast and structure without overwhelming the terroir. Extended élevage on fine lees enhances texture, complexity, and age-worthiness, resulting in a Grand Cru white Burgundy of remarkable balance and presence.

Food & Serving
This Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum is a natural partner for luxurious, richly flavored dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a creamy beurre blanc, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roast chicken with morel cream sauce, or veal in a light, truffled jus. It also shines alongside refined cheeses such as aged Comté, Beaufort, or a delicate Brillat-Savarin. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express without losing freshness. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 45–90 minutes is recommended, especially in the near term, to let the wine unfurl its layers and fully reveal its Grand Cru pedigree.

Producer
Benjamin Leroux, formerly the highly regarded régisseur of Domaine Comte Armand in Pommard, founded his own micro-négoce and domaine with the ambition to craft some of Burgundy’s purest and most terroir-driven wines. Working with top sites across the Côte d’Or, he has quickly become one of the most respected names of his generation, known for meticulous vineyard work, sensitive élevage, and a style that unites clarity, tension, and depth. His bottlings from Grand Cru vineyards such as Bâtard-Montrachet are produced in very limited quantities and are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. In a region steeped in tradition, Leroux stands out as a modern classicist—honoring Burgundy’s heritage while bringing a fresh precision and transparency to every cuvée he makes.
