Description
The 2020 Benjamin de Rothschild Vega Sicilia Macán is a modern, polished expression of Rioja, created through a unique partnership between two legendary names in fine wine. This is Rioja with a Bordeaux-influenced precision: pure, structured Tempranillo wrapped in fine-grained oak and impeccable balance. It stands out for its combination of Spanish soul and French elegance, delivering a serious yet highly drinkable red that will appeal to both classic Rioja fans and collectors of top-tier world reds. First released only in the 2000s, Macán marked a new chapter for Rioja, showing how meticulous vineyard selection, low yields and careful élevage could reframe the region’s flagship grape. The 2020 vintage continues this vision, offering a beautifully composed wine that is both approachable in its youth and built for graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Macán shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple highlights at the rim, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is refined and layered rather than showy: ripe blackberries and dark cherries unfold alongside notes of plum, graphite, violets and a subtle savory edge. Hints of cedar, fine spice, cocoa and a touch of vanilla testify to its well-judged time in French oak, without ever dominating the fruit.
On the palate, Macán is full-bodied yet poised, with a sleek, polished texture and beautifully integrated tannins. The Tempranillo fruit is pure and precise—think black cherry, blackberry and damson—supported by notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, baking spices and a faint mineral lift. The acidity is fresh and mouthwatering, giving energy and length to the finish, which lingers with dark fruit, spice and a gentle chalky grip. While already enjoyable after a bit of air, this 2020 has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years in a good cellar, gaining complexity, softness and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers over time.
Production
Macán is sourced primarily from high-quality Tempranillo vineyards in Rioja Alta, where the combination of altitude, cooler nights and clay-limestone soils produces wines with both depth and elegance. The terroir offers excellent drainage and natural freshness, helping the grapes retain acidity and aromatic complexity even in warmer vintages. Yields are kept intentionally low, and harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure that only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches make it to the winery.
In the cellar, the fruit is carefully sorted, then vinified in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity and precision of aroma. Macán typically undergoes fermentation and maceration designed to extract fine tannins and color without harshness, followed by malolactic fermentation to soften the wine’s texture. Aging takes place mainly in French oak barrels—largely new and recent vintages—for roughly a year and a half (the exact regime varies by vintage), allowing the wine to gain structure, complexity and subtle spice while maintaining a clear line of fruit and terroir expression. The final blend is crafted with the same attention to detail associated with first-growth Bordeaux and the great wines of Vega Sicilia.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile yet serious Rioja that shines alongside richly flavored dishes and fine cuts of meat. Think grilled or roasted lamb, ribeye steak, Iberico pork chops, duck breast, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also works beautifully with hearty Spanish-inspired fare such as lamb with rosemary, chorizo stews, roasted vegetables with olive oil and herbs, or aged Manchego and other firm cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal aromatic expression and balance. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open, soften the tannins and fully reveal its layered bouquet; older bottles will need less time in a decanter, just enough to remove sediment and gently awaken the wine.
Producer
Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia is a joint venture between two of the most respected names in European fine wine: the Rothschild family (through the Edmond de Rothschild branch) and Vega Sicilia, Spain’s most iconic estate from Ribera del Duero. Launched in Rioja in the early 2000s, the project was conceived to create a world-class, terroir-driven expression of 100% Tempranillo that could stand alongside the greatest wines of Europe, while still remaining unmistakably Riojan. The partnership brought together Bordeaux know-how in precision viticulture and élevage with Vega Sicilia’s deep understanding of Spanish terroir and long-aging reds.
Macán and its sibling wines have quickly become benchmarks for the new wave of modern, high-end Rioja, emphasizing vineyard selection, low yields and meticulous cellar work over traditional long American oak aging. This project has helped reposition Rioja on the international stage, showing that the region can produce wines of remarkable finesse, purity and longevity that are equally at home in serious cellars and on top restaurant lists around the world.
