Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Georges de Latour Private Reserve is an opaque, inky ruby-purple with a dense, almost saturated core and a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose is highly aromatic and complex, opening with ripe dark berries, grape compote, black cherry, black plum and a touch of blood orange zest. Layered floral notes of wild violet and rose petal mingle with fresh green mint, bay leaf, and earthy undertones, while the generous use of French oak adds warm baking spices, vanilla, caramel, and a subtle toasted character. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly concentrated Cabernet with voluminous, dark-fruited intensity. Saturated flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry and dark plum are wrapped in a mouth-coating, velvety texture. Secondary layers of bittersweet dark chocolate, savory umami, leather, tobacco leaf and graphite bring real complexity. The signature “Rutherford Dust” tannins are prominent yet refined: firm, cocoa-powder-like, and perfectly framing the wine’s core fruit. The acidity is lively and well-balanced, giving freshness and lift to the richness. Still very youthful, this wine has excellent aging potential and will continue to develop added nuance and harmony over 15–20+ years.

Production
Fruit for this wine comes from BV’s best Cabernet Sauvignon blocks in Rutherford, primarily BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2, originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 20th century. These deeply rooted vines grow in well-drained alluvial fan soils, long regarded as some of Napa Valley’s finest terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, combining excellent drainage with good heat retention and natural concentration. Grapes were hand-harvested and rigorously sorted on arrival at the winery to ensure only the highest-quality berries were used. A portion of the must was fermented in new French oak barrels to encourage early oak integration and a dense, rich texture, while the remainder was vinified in stainless steel and concrete tanks to preserve purity and freshness of fruit. After extended maceration on the skins, the wine was pressed and returned to barrel for malolactic fermentation and a long maturation. The final blend is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, aged 24 months in French oak, 95% of which was new, with BV working closely with top coopers to fine-tune barrel style and consistency.

This powerful yet polished Cabernet is a natural match for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes: think dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison, braised short ribs, or a classic beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring earthy and umami notes such as wild mushrooms, truffle-infused sauces, aged hard cheeses (Comté, Parmigiano-Reggiano), and dark chocolate with a hint of sea salt. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours will help the tannins relax and allow the complex aromatics to unfurl; as it matures, a shorter decant of 45–60 minutes will usually suffice.
