Description
2020 Artuke Paso Las Mañas is a single-vineyard Rioja that shows Tempranillo in an unusually refined, almost Burgundian light. Sourced from high-altitude vines in Samaniego, this wine combines depth of fruit with striking freshness and elegance. With only a small production and 95 points from Robert Parker, it stands out as one of Artuke’s most coveted, terroir-driven bottlings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Paso Las Mañas presents a dark, vibrant ruby-red color with a youthful sheen. The nose is immediately floral, with violet and rose petal notes leading the way, gradually opening to layers of pure red fruit—wild strawberry, red cherry, and redcurrant—framed by a subtle hint of sweet spice and finely integrated oak.
On the palate, the wine is juicy and precise, with that red fruit core returning in a sleek, energetic profile. The texture is supple yet structured, with very fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone of acidity, a direct reflection of the vineyard’s 700-meter elevation. Gentle notes of lightly spiced wood and a touch of earth add complexity without weighing the wine down. The finish is long and harmonious, with the acidity and fruit perfectly interwoven, suggesting excellent aging potential over the next 8–12 years, and likely longer in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
Paso Las Mañas is sourced from a 3.9-hectare single vineyard planted in 1999 in Samaniego, in the Rioja Alavesa subregion, at around 700 meters above sea level. This altitude, combined with the region’s limestone-rich soils and cooler mesoclimate, gives the wine its lift, tension, and aromatic precision. Harvesting is entirely manual, with pickers performing an initial strict selection in the vineyard and collecting the bunches in small baskets. These are then transported in shallow crates—no more than about 10 cm deep—to avoid crushing and preserve pristine fruit. At the winery, all bunches are hand-sorted on a selection table before being fully destemmed and transferred by gravity into stainless-steel tanks for fermentation with only indigenous yeasts. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place in wooden vats of 500 and 3,500 liters, and the wine is then matured on the same wooden vessels for about 15 months, allowing slow, gentle integration of oak while maintaining a pure expression of Tempranillo and site.
Food & Serving
This elegant yet structured Rioja pairs beautifully with refined dishes that highlight its floral, red-fruited profile: roast lamb with herbs, grilled Iberian pork, duck breast with cherry or berry jus, and earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. It also works well with aged Manchego or other firm, nutty cheeses. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to emphasize its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting for about 45–60 minutes in its youth will help the floral and red fruit notes unfurl and soften the tannins, while older bottles may need only a brief, gentle decant to remove sediment.
Producer
Artuke is a small, family-run estate based in Baños de Ebro in Rioja Alavesa, led by brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel—hence the name “Artuke,” a blend of their first names. Having worked in their parents’ winery since 2003 and 2010 respectively, the brothers have gradually steered the project towards an artisanal, terroir-focused philosophy, emphasizing site-specific bottlings over generic blends. They are widely regarded as part of the new wave of Rioja producers, prioritizing finesse, freshness, and a Burgundian sense of place over heavy extraction and oak. Their single-vineyard wines, such as Paso Las Mañas, have drawn significant critical acclaim and helped position Artuke as one of the most exciting and insightful voices in contemporary Rioja.
