Description
The 2020 Antinori Solaia Magnum is a commanding expression of one of Tuscany’s most iconic Super Tuscans, presented here in the coveted large format for added complexity and longevity. Crafted from the best parcels of the sun-drenched Solaia vineyard on the Tignanello estate, this wine marries Italian soul with Bordeaux-inspired structure. First produced in 1978, Solaia has since become a benchmark for modern Tuscan excellence, and the 2020 vintage continues this legacy with remarkable purity, depth, and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Solaia shows a deep, concentrated ruby color with vibrant garnet reflections, hinting at both power and freshness. The nose is intensely perfumed yet refined, opening with notes of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum, layered with graphite, violet, and hints of Mediterranean herbs. Subtle nuances of cedar, sweet spice, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate emerge as the wine breathes, reflecting its fine-grained oak aging.
On the palate, this vintage is full-bodied and poised, combining plush, ripe fruit with a precise, linear backbone. Flavors of cassis, blackberries, and juicy red cherry are interwoven with savory notes of espresso, licorice, and pencil shavings. The tannins are firm yet polished, creating a velvety structure that carries through to a long, persistent finish marked by mineral tension and vibrant acidity. In magnum format, the 2020 Solaia has excellent aging potential—easily 15–25 years or more in a proper cellar—developing additional layers of complexity, truffle, leather, and dried flowers with time.
Production
Solaia is sourced from a single, south- to southwest-facing vineyard on the historic Tignanello estate in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico area. The soils are predominantly rocky, with galestro and limestone that offer excellent drainage and help concentrate aromas, while the vineyard’s elevation and exposure ensure optimal ripening and freshness, even in warmer years. The wine is typically a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Sangiovese and a small portion of Cabernet Franc, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure meticulous selection in the vineyard. After careful sorting, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled tanks, with attentive extraction to preserve elegance and aromatics. The wine then matures in small French oak barrels (barriques), mostly new, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for around 18 months before further refinement in bottle—extended in the magnum format to enhance harmony and longevity.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Antinori Solaia Magnum is a natural partner for rich, refined dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary, braised short ribs, or aged Tuscan pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with game dishes, truffle-infused recipes, and deep-flavored mushroom ragù over fresh pasta. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended—at least 1.5 to 2 hours before serving—to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften. In magnum, a slightly longer decant can further showcase the wine’s complexity and elegance.

The Antinori family has been producing wine in Tuscany for over six centuries, with documented activity dating back to 1385—making them one of the most storied and influential wine families in the world. From their base in Tuscany, they have helped redefine Italian wine, playing a pivotal role in the birth of the Super Tuscan movement with pioneering wines like Tignanello and Solaia. The Solaia vineyard, located within the Tignanello estate in the Chianti Classico hills, is one of Antinori’s crown jewels, consistently yielding wines of remarkable character and prestige. Antinori’s combination of tradition, innovation, and relentless quality focus has earned them global acclaim, with Solaia regularly featuring among the world’s most sought-after and highest-rated wines.
