2020 Alejandro Fernández Pesquera MXI Selección De Barricas is a modern, finely crafted Ribera del Duero that pays tribute to both its historic terroir and the new generation of the Fernández Rivera family. Made from carefully selected Tempranillo parcels at high altitude, it combines vibrant fruit with a polished, barrel-aged elegance. This limited cuvée is only produced in top vintages, making 2020 the long-awaited successor to the acclaimed 2016 release.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, MXI 2020 shows a clean, bright appearance with an intense violet hue that hints at its youth and energy. The colour is deep yet luminous, with a beautiful rim that suggests concentration without heaviness. On the nose, the wine is immediately fresh and expressive, offering generous notes of red and black fruit—think blackberry, raspberry, and ripe cherry—layered with subtle hints of sweet spice and a touch of floral lift. On the palate, it is juicy and well-structured, with rounded, silky tannins and a perfectly judged acidity that keeps the wine lively and mouthwatering. The finish is long and very pleasant, echoing the dark berries and a gentle spiciness from its time in barrel. While already delicious and approachable now, MXI 2020 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next several years, gaining complexity with additional bottle age.

Production
MXI 2020 is crafted from 100% Tempranillo grown on parcels 10 and 11 of the Tinto Pesquera estate in Ribera del Duero, planted at around 800 meters above sea level. This high altitude, combined with the region’s sandy soils, delivers naturally low yields, excellent concentration and a marked freshness in the fruit. The vineyards are farmed with strong respect for the environment, following fully organic practices that minimise treatments and rely on ecological measures to protect the vines from pests. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation to ensure only the best fruit is used in this Selección de Barricas. After fermentation, the wine is aged in carefully chosen barrels, allowing it to gain texture, complexity and harmony while preserving the purity of the Tempranillo fruit that defines the house style of Tinto Pesquera.

Food & Serving
MXI 2020 is a versatile red that shines alongside grilled lamb, Iberian pork, roast beef, charcuterie, and mature hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with hearty stews, mushroom dishes, and grilled vegetables seasoned with olive oil and herbs. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C. Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving is recommended to allow the aromas and texture to fully open up, especially if you are enjoying it in its youth.
