Description
The 2020 Alejandro Fernández Condado de Haza Reserva is a polished expression of Ribera del Duero from one of Spain’s most respected names in modern Tempranillo. Built with depth, structure and elegance, it reflects the estate’s focus on ripe fruit, fine oak integration and a distinctly castilian sense of power. Alejandro Fernández helped define the region’s rise to international prominence, and this wine carries that legacy in a refined, contemporary style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and a graceful evolution. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with dark cherry, blackberry and plum framed by notes of vanilla, cedar, cocoa, spice and a touch of leather or tobacco from oak aging.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a well-balanced core of dark fruit, sweet spice and savory nuance. The finish is persistent and structured, suggesting good drinking now with the potential to develop further complexity over the next several years.
Production
Produced in Castilla y León, likely from high-quality Tempranillo grown in the Ribera del Duero area, where the continental climate, warm days and cool nights help preserve freshness and intensify flavor. The vineyards benefit from elevated sites and demanding soils that encourage low yields and concentration. Harvesting is typically carried out with care to select healthy, fully ripe fruit, followed by traditional red-wine vinification and maturation in oak to build texture, complexity and the Reserva signature.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, game, or hearty Spanish dishes such as lamb stews and roasted pork. It also works beautifully with aged Manchego and other mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for about 30–60 minutes if drinking now, especially to allow the aromas and tannins to open.
Producer
Alejandro Fernández and the Condado de Haza estate are closely tied to the modern identity of Ribera del Duero. Fernández is widely regarded as one of the pioneering figures who helped put the region on the map, building a reputation for powerful yet balanced Tempranillo wines with impressive consistency. The Pesquera family of wines is celebrated internationally, and Condado de Haza remains one of the most recognized expressions of that legacy.
