Description

Abadia Retuerta’s 2014 Pago Petit Verdot is a rare, single-varietal expression of this powerful Bordeaux grape from the hillsides of Spain’s Duero Valley. Crafted from a single estate parcel (“Pago”), it showcases how Petit Verdot thrives in the intense sunlight and cool nights of Castilla y León, delivering both structure and surprising finesse. This cuvée has become one of the estate’s signature wines, illustrating Abadia Retuerta’s pioneering role in elevating single-vineyard, single-variety wines in the Ribera del Duero area.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Pago Petit Verdot is deep, almost opaque ruby with a violet rim, hinting at both concentration and youthfulness despite its age. The nose is intensely aromatic: blackcurrant, black plum and wild blackberry layered with violet, graphite and subtle notes of cedar, cocoa, sweet spice and a touch of licorice. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, firmly structured red with finely sculpted tannins and vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lively. Dense black fruits—cassis, bramble and ripe blueberry—are wrapped in notes of dark chocolate, espresso, tobacco leaf and a mineral, almost ferrous undertone typical of the Duero terraces. The finish is long, savory and persistent, with spice and floral notes lingering. With its concentration and robust tannic backbone, this 2014 vintage still has excellent aging potential; stored correctly, it should continue to evolve and gain tertiary complexity over the next 8–12 years.

Production
The grapes for Pago Petit Verdot come from a single vineyard parcel on the Abadia Retuerta estate near Sardón de Duero, where stony, well-drained soils rich in limestone and gravel sit above the Duero River. The continental climate, with hot days and cool nights, allows Petit Verdot to ripen fully while preserving acidity and aromatics. Yields are kept low, and the fruit is hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the winery. After a cold soak, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats with extended maceration to gently extract color, tannin and flavor. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels—many of them new—for an extended period, refining the tannins and adding subtle layers of spice and toast without overwhelming the natural character of the grape and terroir.

Food & Serving
This robust yet refined Petit Verdot is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: grilled or roasted lamb, beef ribeye, venison, wild boar and other game all work beautifully. It also pairs well with slow-cooked stews, mushroom-based dishes, and mature hard cheeses like Manchego curado or aged Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the tannins to soften and the more complex floral, spice and mineral notes to fully emerge.

Producer
Abadia Retuerta is an estate of historic roots and modern ambition, built around a restored 12th-century monastery near Sardón de Duero, in the heart of Spain’s premium red wine country. Although just outside the formal Ribera del Duero DO boundary, the estate shares the same high-altitude climate and Duero River influence that have made the region famous. Since the 1990s, Abadia Retuerta has focused on precision viticulture and parcel-by-parcel vinification, becoming a benchmark for terroir-driven wines in Castilla y León. Its single-vineyard “Pago” wines, including the acclaimed Pago Petit Verdot, have earned high international ratings and helped cement the winery’s reputation as one of Spain’s most innovative and quality-focused producers.
