In the glass, the 2019 The Mascot shows a deep, saturated ruby to purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and complex, with dark blackberry and blackcurrant at the core, supported by notes of black tea, graphite, cedar, and a subtle lift of dried violets and warm spice. On the palate, the wine is structured yet polished, with refined, powdery tannins that frame dense, pure fruit. Expect ripe cassis, black cherry, and plum, intertwined with cocoa, tobacco leaf, and a cool mineral edge that reflects its hillside origins. Production
The Mascot is sourced from the younger vineyard blocks of Harlan Estate, BOND, and Promontory—steep, meticulously farmed Napa Valley hillsides that share thin, rocky soils, excellent drainage, and pronounced diurnal temperature swings. These conditions naturally limit yields and produce small, intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon berries. Harvest is carried out by hand, block by block, with precise picking decisions guided by ripeness, flavor development, and tannin maturity. In the cellar, The Mascot is vinified with the same rigor as its prestigious parent estates: careful sorting, temperature-controlled fermentations, and extended macerations to achieve both depth and finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak (a significant portion new), allowing the structure to knit together and the aromatics to gain complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit.

This is a cellar-worthy Napa Cabernet that shines alongside richly flavored, refined dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye, lamb chops with rosemary and garlic, venison, or slow-braised short ribs; on the more elegant side, it pairs beautifully with roasted duck, truffle-infused dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to fully unfold; as the wine ages, a shorter decant primarily to remove sediment will be sufficient.
